Elton Indians mourn death of chief

The 92-year-old chief of the Coushatta Indian Tribe at Elton has died.

Chief Jeff Abbie was laid to rest Friday afternoon in the soil that he knew so well in the Indian reservation; the area that he had served as father for several decades.

The nonagenarian succumbed to an attack of influenza Thursday afternoon at the home of his son, Martin, who was also ill and unable to attend the funeral.

Last rites for Chief Abbie were simple and marked by dignity – the way the beloved chieftain would want it.

KKK compliments Rev. Ensign

Ku Klux Klansmen complimented Rev. F.J. Ensign, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church, Sunday evening with a gift of $110 in the presence of an enormous congregation.

Ten representatives of the Klan in full regalia marched into the church at the close of the service. The leader stepped to the front and delivered the following statement to the pastor: "We as representatives of the K.K.K. hand you this donation of $110 to show our appreciation for what you have done in running down sin and crime"

OIL INDICATED FIRST TIME HERE IN 1893

First indications that there was an oil field in the vicinity of Jennings was in 1893 when a German homesteader dropped a lighted match into a spring, causing a flash of fire of the water, according to T.C. Mahaffey, who was a pioneer in the first oil development here.

Sept. 6 is kick-off date for sale of La. Lottery tickets

The first instant winner Louisiana Lottery tickets will officially go on sale on Friday, September 6.

"Louisiana Treasures" is the title given to the first series of tickets.

The instant tickets may be purchased singly or in sets of five – all designed using a series of Louisiana motifs and images. "While 'Louisiana Treasures' will be fun and inexpensive, the real action will come when we award the quarter-million dollar grand prizes around the state" lottery president Michael Carr said.

Man shot in mouth by officer, merely spits out cartridge

Enforcement officers are still marveling over the case of a man being shot through the mouth here Sunday morning and who is now in the parish jail suffering no more than a sore face, when under ordinary circumstances, he would now be dead and buried.

In fact, the case is so puzzling to police officers that they are delving into the effectiveness of ammunition and making a study of the whole situation for future use.

Local Democratic delegate relates her lonely experience

The Jeff Davis Parish Democratic Party was represented by one black woman at the state convention in Shreveport this past weekend.

Mrs. Arthur Lewis, a schoolteacher from Roanoke, said she was the lone figure sitting in the area set aside for nine delegates from Jeff Davis, a small voice in the din of hundreds of loud and boisterous delegates attending the convention.

"I wasn't informed about what was going to take place. The Democratic party in this parish is poorly organized," Lewis said.

Get Rich Quick Scheme Has Hit

A lady in Jennings whose name is withheld by request has received one of the famous "chain letters" from the National Mail Order Brokerage, Minneapolis, Minn., the concern which the postal authorities have issued a fraud order against and confiscated their mail, which consisted of thousands of letters containing dimes to purchase the silk petticoat.

Wild West Show Will Exhibit

The 101 Ranch Wild West Show, the most remarkable amusement institution in the history of outdoor spectacles, will visit this city on Tuesday, Nov. 10, presenting afternoon and evening performances and introducing itself with an elaborate forenoon street parade. The life of the ranch and range and Indian camp will be reproduced in all its spectacular and vivid picturesqueness by real, living figures of the frontier.
