Strawberry fundraiser to benefit 4-H Club

There is now a delicious way to support local youth throughout the parish.

“Strawberries are coming early this year,” said 4-H Extension Agent Amy Welch.

Tickets for fresh Louisiana strawberries are now on sale as part of the Jeff Davis 4-H Junior Leader Club fundraiser.

“Members are selling the tickets in an effort to raise money to go toward their trips and community service projects,” said Welch.

Each member must be involved in a certain number of community service projects to attend the award trip at the end of the year.

Those interested in learning a few skills in the kitchen are encouraged to sign up for the Culinary Arts Summer Camps at SOWELA.

Several sessions will be offered for first through eighth-grade students.

“We are pleased to announce our 2020 Summer Camp line up at the Morgan Smith Site in Jennings,” said marketing and communication manager Darlene Hoffpauir. “Chef Amy Haddox will lead each camp, providing children with the opportunity to explore a possible career path in the culinary arts while learning cooking skills and kitchen safety.”

OAKDALE – After waiting several years for a girls’ basketball playoff win, the Welsh Lady Greyhounds (WHS) earned one in shocking fashion Thursday night when the No. 24 Lady Hounds chopped down No. 9 Kinder 68-61. The Lady Jackets entered the contest with an impressive 22-6 overall record and a district title to their name, however WHS Head Coach Kaleb Beargeaux’s club spoiled all the fun with their upset win. The Lady Hounds used a huge night from Krislyn Cormier, who knocked down 29 points en route to the seven-point victory over Kinder. Welsh will now advance to face the No.

CROWLEY – In waves of blue and gold, the Hathaway High School (HHS) basketball squad matched up with a tough J.S. Clark team Thursday night for the District 7-B title at Crowley High School. Despite stringing together a long winning streak, the Hornets saw it snapped by the Bulldogs 70-64.

No. 15 Jennings falls to No. 18 Carroll on the road 59-49

MONROE – The No. 15 Jennings Lady Bulldogs (JHS) kept things close in the early going in their opening round 3A battle with No. 15 Carroll, however a pair of 20-point second half quarters led the Monroe-based Lady Bulldogs to a 59-49 win over JHS. The loss ends a great season for the Lady Bulldogs from Jennings, as they finished with an overall mark of 20-11. Carroll will now advance to the second round to square off with the No. 2 Mansfield Lady Wolverines.

Lady Indians, Lady Hornets to host regional round playoff games

After both recieving a bye in the opening round of the Class A and B playoffs, respectively, Elton High School and Hathaway High School will each host regional round games on Monday. The No. 3 Lady Indians will square off with No. 19 Tensas at Oris Guidry Gymnasium on Monday at 6pm. The winner of that contest will then meet either No. 6 Delhi or No. 11 Grand Lake in the quarterfinal round of the Class B Playoffs.
