The officials needed to know if the turmoil was chilling consumer spending. Problem was, a partial shutdown of the government had halted the release of most economic data.

District report: Clean audit, healthy finances

The Jeff Davis Soil and Water Conservation District displayed healthy finances for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2019.

The Louisiana Legislative Auditor’s Office (LLAO) released the results of the entity’s annual audit this week.

The 10-page report on the district was completed by certified public accountant J. Aaron Cooper, LLC, of Jennings.

According to the combined balance sheet, total assets for all fund types and account groups was $44,097, up from $34,462 in the previous fiscal year.

Split Senate Acquits Trumps

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump won impeachment acquittal Wednesday in the U.S. Senate, bringing to a close only the third presidential trial in American history with votes that split the country, tested civic norms and fed the tumultuous 2020 race for the White House.

With Chief Justice John Roberts presiding, senators sworn to do “impartial justice” stood and stated their votes for the roll call — “guilty” or “not guilty” — in a swift tally almost exclusively along party lines. Trump, the chief justice then declared, shall “be, and is hereby, acquitted of the charges.”

ELTON - Locals will soon have the opportunity to join in on two days worth of Mardi Gras fun. Ceaser’s Chicken Run will begin on Saturday, Feb. 22, and continue on Sunday, Feb. 23.

“The run is a tradition I was raised to be a part of,” said organizer Ceaser Hilton. “It started in the early 1970’s and was founded by the late Paul Ceaser. My grandfather brought the tradition to Elton across Bayou Nezpique from Basile. After he passed away, the tradition began to die off until we decided to bring it back in 2013.”
