During the month of January, we had a delightful young priest from Sri Lanka visiting at Immaculate Conception Parish and each week his homily seemed to have a surprise within the context. One week he told the story of a priest who for many years would weekly visit brothels and hire ladies of the evening. When he had paid the going rate, he would occupy the time teaching each lady about the life of Jesus and how he preached and taught among the poor, the broken, the sinful.

Sanders supporters can’t see the forest for the tree

Here’s my fearless prediction for the 2020 presidential election: To borrow a Grateful Dead lyric, it’s bound to be a long, strange trip. No way it resembles a “normal” election year, whatever that would be.

Unremoved but very far from being exonerated, President Donald Trump isn’t going down without a wild spectacle. That much is sure.

Indeed, he may not go down at all.

Funeral services for Norman Lee Hebert, Sr., 78, of Evangeline will be held at Matthews and Son Funeral Home Chapel in Jennings Friday, Feb. 7, 2020, at 2 p.m., with Brother Gary DarDar officiating.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at the funeral home beginning Thursday, Feb. 6, 2020, from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. The family requests that visitation resume Friday, Feb. 7, from 9 a.m. until the time of his funeral service.

Norman will be laid to rest in Tee Mamou Cemetery with Full Military Rites.

Tigers, Lady Tigers breeze through Welsh

LAKE ARTHUR – The Lake Arthur Lady Tigers and Tigers pounded the Welsh Lady Hounds and Hounds in district 6-2A play Tuesday night from Wilbert “Nookie” Moore Gymnasium. The Lady Tigers blasted the Lady Hounds by a final of 85-42 behind 39 huge points from Deonna Brister, while the Tigers hammered the Hounds by a count of 84-41 behind 29 points from senior Torrell Levias.

Lacassine, Bell City split in District 7-B contests

LACASSINE – The Lacassine Lady Cardinals (LHS) moved to 27-6 overall, 3-1 in league play with a low scoring, 30-21 win over the Bell City Lady Bruins Tuesday night. The Cardinals dropped a seven-point decision to the Bruins by a 41-34 count in the nightcap of Tuesday’s district tussle.

Ronald Dale Taylor, 73, of Welsh completed his flight home on Monday, Feb. 3, 2020.

Funeral services, officiated by Rev. Ricky Treece, will be held at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Welsh.

The family welcomed friends at the church Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2020, from 4-8 p.m. Visitation will resume today, Wednesday, from 8 a.m. until time of service.

He will be laid to rest in Oaklawn Cemetery.

CHURCH POINT - Funeral services for Jerry Thomas Richert, 79, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, 2020, at St. Edward Catholic Church in Richard.

The family requested that visiting hours be observed at Guidry Funeral Home, located at 219 N. Broadway in Church Point, from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, and from 8 a.m. Thursday until the time of services. A recitation of the Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday by Lerlin LeJeune.

LAKE ARTHUR - Funeral services for Wesley Wayne Touchet, 45, will be held at 6 p.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2020, in Miguez Funeral Home in Lake Arthur, with Pastor John Cernek officiating.

Funeral home visitation will be held Wednesday, Feb. 5, from 11:30 a.m. until time of services.

Mr. Touchet’s body will be cremated following the services.

Mr. Touchet was a lifelong resident of Jennings and an electrician by trade. He loved playing golf, watching Saints and LSU football games, but mostly he enjoyed being with his family and friends.

Overcoming the fear of falling

Each year, 3 million older people are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease and Control, one out of five falls causes a serious injury such broken bones or a head injury.

The Jeff Davis Council on Aging is doing their best to make sure this does not happen to our seniors here in the parish by offering a class designed to help seniors overcome the fear of falling.

As people get older, some may experience a fear of falling. This may cause the elderly to restrict activity because they are afraid to hurt themselves.

Local tourism benefits entire state

The focus on tourism in our parish not only benefits Jeff Davis, but helps to make our state a travel destination for both out-of-state and international visitors alike.

The Gator Chateau here in Jennings was recently named the state’s attraction of the year.

The new facility is one of the many unique attractions in our area, and is the only place in the state where you can get the hands-on experience of meeting a baby alligator.
