Vendors return in Wuhan as China prepares virus memorial

WUHAN, China (AP) — Sidewalk vendors wearing face masks and gloves sold pork, tomatoes, carrots and other vegetables to shoppers Friday in the Chinese city where the coronavirus pandemic began, as workers prepared for a national memorial this weekend for health workers and others who died in the outbreak.

Feed the Children receives clean audit

Feed the Children of Jennings was found to have healthy finances with no instances of noncompliance in their financial records.

The Louisiana Legislative Auditor’s Office (LLAO) recently released the results of an annual audit completed on the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2019.

The 31-page report was completed by certified public accountants Lenora and Krielow, LLC, of Jennings.

Current assets totaled $112,806 for the fiscal year with liabilities listed at $80,597.

La. virus cases spike as testing expands statewide

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Louisiana’s confirmed number of coronavirus cases spiked 42 percent higher Thursday as a backlog of test results poured in and confirmed Gov. John Bel Edwards’ message that the virus’s footprint across the state is much wider than limited testing has been able to document so far.

Nearly 9,200 people have tested positive for the virus that causes COVID-19, according to the latest figures released by the Louisiana Department of Health, a jump of more than 2,700 confirmed cases from a day earlier and the largest single-day increase reported so far.

Spillway opening to safeguard New Orleans levees

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The Mississippi River is so high that a spillway north of New Orleans must be opened to safeguard the city’s levees, an Army Corps of Engineers official announced Thursday.

That will make an unprecedented third straight year, and the sixth time this decade, that the Bonnet Carré Spillway has been opened. It was used twice last year and once each in 2018, 2016 and 2011. The 1970s, when it was opened three times, is the only other decade with more than one opening since the 5.7-mile-long (9.2 kilometer) concrete structure was finished in 1931.

NEW YORK (AP) — The coronavirus outbreak has thrown 10 million Americans out of work in just two weeks, the swiftest, most stunning collapse the U.S. job market has ever witnessed, and economists warn unemployment could reach levels not seen since the Depression, as the economic damage piles up around the world.

A record 10 million sought US jobless aid in past 2 weeks

WASHINGTON (AP) — More than 6.6 million Americans applied for unemployment benefits last week — doubling a record high set just one week earlier — a sign that layoffs are accelerating in the midst of the coronavirus outbreak.

Combined with last week’s report that 3.3 million people sought unemployment aid two weeks ago, the U.S. economy has now suffered nearly 10 million layoffs in just the past few weeks — far exceeding the figure for any corresponding period on record.
