The Rev. Dr. Arthur R. White, pastor of Christ Community Baptist Church in Philadelphia, Penn., died Saturday, March 21, 2020. He was 71 years old.

A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at a later date.

Rev. Dr. Arthur R. White was born July 4, 1948, in Roanoke to the Late Deacon Vandy White and Geraldine Joubert White. He was a fourth-generation preacher in the White Family. Rev. Dr. White was pastor at Christ Community Baptist Church for 39 years.

LAKE ARTHUR - Private graveside services for Mrs. Ella Mae Lyons Richard, 81, were held Wednesday, April 1, 2020, in St. Anthony Cemetery under the direction of Miguez Funeral Home.

Mrs. Richard passed away on Tuesday, March 31, 2020, in her residence.

She was a native of Church Point but spent most of her life in the Lake Arthur/Jennings community. She was a member of Bethel Church. She loved her church. She enjoyed visiting with her family and friends.

Cynicism can’t keep up with reality

During a recent spate of cynicism, I made a prediction to friends: Before this thing is over, Trumpists will be calling COVID-19 God’s will. So let’s get back to work, save the stock market and let the disease sort them out. There are more than 300 million individuals in the United States. Surely we can spare a few million old-timers who were going to die anyway.

State legislature briefly convenes

BATON ROUGE - The Louisiana Legislature convened at 11 a.m. to move bills on the legal calendar and to introduce contingency measures for budget and capital outlay.

District 37 State Representative Troy Romero had a bill that was scheduled for April 1, however, that bill will have to be heard in the full house at a later date.

HB 80 would provide relative to group health insurance for retired district attorneys in the 31st Judicial District.

It’s business as usual for employees of the Jeff Davis Parish Police Jury, who have been busy mowing and tending to roads in rural areas recently.

 

SNAP benefits increase

As of Tuesday, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefit recipients saw an increase to receive the maximum amount allotted according to persons in each household.

“We want the people of Louisiana to have food during this time,” said Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) secretary Marketa Walters in a press release. “Those recipients that are not at the maximum will be put to the maximum.”

NEIGHBORHOOD HERO

Postal carriers often travel the same route delivering mail each day. Recently, while performing his normal routine, one carrier happened upon an unexpected situation.

“I was putting mail into a box on Norwood Drive,” said carrier Charles Drake. “That’s when I could hear screams for help coming from the home.”

Surprised by what he heard, Drake said he initially assumed the worst.

“The elderly husband was standing at the front door, calling for me not to leave, to please help him,” he recalls. “Knowing the kind couple, I went to see what was wrong.”
