What’s really going on with Trump and the Post Office

The news is filled with reports of President Trump’s “assault” on the U.S. Postal Service. Democrats and some in the media say the president is deliberately slowing mail delivery and crippling the Postal Service so that it cannot handle an anticipated flood of voting by mail in the presidential election. Barack Obama said Trump is trying to “actively kneecap” the Postal Service to suppress the vote. Speaker Nancy Pelosi has called the House back into session “to address the sabotage of the Postal Service.” What is going on?

Don’t let hype determine your vote

A person’s vote should be based on knowledge of issues and candidates, as well as that person’s values and hopes for America. Unfortunately, leaders on both sides of the aisle too often depend on celebrities and popular figures to win votes. What is even more disappointing is that voters allow themselves to be swayed by these tactics.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, 2020, at St. Jules Catholic Church for Nell Guillory Doucet, 90, who passed away Aug. 19, 2020, at Jennings American Legion Hospital. Fr. Paul LaFleur, pastor of St. Jules Catholic Church, will be officiating for the services. The family is requesting visiting hours to be held today, Friday, from 4-9 p.m. and Saturday from 8-9:30 a.m. at Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home in Iota. A rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. today, Friday.

KC barbecue fundraiser rescheduled

The annual barbecue fundraiser for the Knights of Columbus Council 2012 from Our Lady Help of Christians Parish has been rescheduled for Sunday, Oct. 25. From 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., the meals will be distributed in a drive through fashion at St. Mary’s Center parking lot.

Local elementary school receives United Way donation

United Way of Southwest Louisiana recently donated $10,000 to James Ward Elementary School to help cover the costs of needed school supplies. The annual Writestart Program is an initiative that ensures teachers that each student will have all necessary items needed for a successful start to the year.

Cuomo brushes back report of care home death undercount

NEW YORK (AP) — New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo responded Wednesday to an Associated Press report that his state’s coronavirus death toll in nursing homes could be a significant undercount, saying it makes sense to include only those residents who died on the home’s property.

Unlike the federal government and every other state with major outbreaks, only New York explicitly says that it counts just residents who died on nursing home property and not those who were transported to hospitals and died there.
