The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is offering assistance for farmers or ranchers whose operation has been directly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, and this now includes crawfish farmers.

School board lists COVID-related costs

The Jeff Davis Parish School Board has released a list of increased costs it has faced in the wake of COVID-19.

Those costs are related to the reopening of schools, as guidelines from the state require heavy cleaning and social distancing mandate.

Jennings man charged with animal abuse

A Jennings man is currently in custody after numerous animals were found to be emaciated in his custody.

On Monday, Michael Alexander, 28, of Jennings, was charged with four counts of simple cruelty to animals and eight counts of aggravated cruelty to animals.

Jennings Police Department Chief Danny Semmes said animal control received a complaint that there were numerous animals in the backyard of a residence on the west end of town that appeared to be in distress.

Fire safety encouraged as school resumes

With classes back in session, the Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office urges parents, students and school staff to keep fire safety precautions in mind.

“August is the month when thousands of school children are usually filling up the halls of campuses across the state,” said public affairs director Ashley Rodrigue. “This year, we know things are a little different. Some schools are entirely virtual while others have a staggered attendance program. Either way, fire drills are still important to continue, both at school and at home.”
