Pfizer: Mid-November earliest to seek vaccine OK

NEW YORK (AP) — Pfizer Inc. cannot request emergency authorization of its COVID-19 vaccine before the third week of November – and that’s if everything goes well, the company’s CEO announced Friday.

Despite President Donald Trump’s repeated promises of a vaccine before Election Day, scientists have been cautioning that it’s unlikely data showing a leading shot actually works would come until November or December.

Another leading U.S. contender, Moderna Inc., previously announced the earliest it could seek authorization of its own vaccine would be Nov. 25.

Rudolph going up for auction

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Rudolph and his still-shiny nose are getting a new home, and it’s bound to be a lot nicer than the Island of Misfit Toys.

The soaring reindeer and Santa Claus figures who starred in in the perennially beloved stop-motion animation Christmas special “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” are going up for auction.

Ellender says ‘real’ policy change in mixing doubtful

U.S. Sen. Allen J. Ellender today informed the Jeff Davis Parish Police jury he doubted "any real policy changes" would come from the legislative branch of the federal government regarding integration of schools.

In a letter to jury president J.E. Fontenot of Welsh, Ellender said he was "very much concerned over the effect" of the recent Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling demanding total and immediate desegregation of Louisiana schools.

GOTT'S COVE - Hattie Doucet and Vena Miller of this small community have passed their final examinations for high school diplomas and will receive them tonight at Crowley High School in a graduation ceremony.

Happens all the time in May, right?

Except that in this case, Mrs. Doucet is 70 years old, the oldest graduate to be certified in her home parish of Acadia, and her daughter, Mrs. Miller, 46, is graduating with her. Part of the reason for the two-generation graduation is Harold Miller, Mrs. Miller's son and Mrs. Doucet's grandson.

Breaks in bar to get cigarettes and whiskey

City police are searching for a chain-smoking burglar who may be a wee bit tipsy today.

The burglar pried open the rear door of Bill's Bar at 818 South Main Street last night and made off with 5 packs of cigarettes and a quart of whiskey.

Oil old timers fete planned here Thursday

An event that helped change the course of history and gave birth to the petroleum industry will be observed Thursday throughout the state and nation.

The event will mark the 100th anniversary of the world's first commercially successful oil well. On Aug. 27, 1859, Colonel Edwin L. Drake struck oil at 69 1/2 feet with his homemade drilling rig near the small mountain town of Titusville, Penn.

Mrs. Joyce Young Istre, 83, of Jennings entered external rest on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2020, in Camelot Brookside Nursing Home.

Funeral services for Mrs. Joyce Young Istre of Jennings will be held Saturday, Oct. 17, 2020, at 11 a.m., at Matthews and Son Funeral Home Chapel, with Deacon Mike Tramel officiating.

Visitation, at the request of the family, will begin today, Friday, Oct. 16, 2020, at the funeral home, with a rosary recited at 6 p.m. Visitation will resume Saturday, Oct. 17, 2020, from 8 a.m. until the time of her funeral services.
