Dodgers decline option on RHP Jimmy Nelson

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jimmy Nelson’s $2 million option was declined Friday by the Los Angeles Dodgers, allowing the right-hander to become a free agent.

Nelson is owed a $500,000 buyout.

It’s been a rough three years for Nelson, who had a career year with the Brewers in 2017, posting a 3.49 ERA in 29 starts, with 199 strikeouts. But he missed all of 2018 after right shoulder surgery, and was limited to just 22 innings last season with Milwaukee due to elbow problems.

NBA, players extend deadline for opting out of CBA

(AP) - The NBA and its players agreed Friday to extend the deadline for opting out of the Collective Bargaining Agreement by one week until Nov. 6, and talks will continue in the interim regarding the numerous issues that have to be decided before next season begins.

It is the fourth extension of the opt-out deadline since the pandemic started in March. If either the NBA or the National Basketball Players Association chooses to opt out by that date, the CBA would be terminated Dec. 14, “unless the parties agree otherwise,” the NBA said.

Phillies clear out ‘pen, decline options on Neris, Phelps

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies have declined options on relievers Héctor Neris, David Phelps and David Robertson, clearing out the bullpen after it posted the highest ERA in the majors.

Philadelphia also said Friday that righthander Heath Hembree, left-hander Adam Morgan and right-hander Blake Parker all elected free agency rather than accept outright assignments off the 40-man roster. Right-hander Johan Quezada was claimed off waivers from Miami, and infielder Phil Gosselin also refused an outright assignments and elected free agency.

Iota announces 2020-21 Homecoming Court

Iota High School (IHS) kicked off Homecoming week by having the student body vote electronically for Homecoming Queen. Students were required to verify address in the log book and write their signature. They were then guided to the electronic voting computers and were able to cast their votes.

Jennings comes from behind to move to 5-0

LEESVILLE - The Jennings Bulldogs trailed the Leesville Wampus Cats 34-14 midway through the third quarter, but in tradition form they rallied for 35 unanswerd poits to defeat their guests by a fnial of 56-41. Trevor Etienne had a career night by rushing for 307yards and 3 TD’s in the win.

“I’m just very proud of our players and coaching staff for not getting down and rallying back to beat a good football team,” said JHS head coach Rusty Phelps. “Its a credit to our kids for continuing to play hard and never give up.”

KCs hold barbecue fundraiser, donate to OLHC Youth Group

The Our Lady Help of Christians Youth Group played an important role in putting together and distributing meals for KC Council 2012’s annual barbecue fundraiser on Oct. 25.

In appreciation for the Youth Group’s efforts, KC members David Bouley and Grand Knight Carl Benoit (in photo at right) presented a donation of $400 to Youth Group Director Erin Fontenot (right) for use in the Youth Group’s activities. Knights of Columbus Council 2012 from Jennings held their annual barbecue on Sunday, Oct. 25.

Area residents to hear Graham

Two large Greyhound buses have been chartered to carry passengers from Jennings to the once-delayed Billy Graham Greater Houston Crusade on Nov. 26, Dr. J.W. Lee, pastor of the First Baptist Church, said today.

Dr. Lee said the Jennings Ministerial Association is promoting attendance of Jennings and area residents to the crusade. He said a block of 150 reserved tickets has been requested so a large number of persons from this area can attend.

The crusade will be held in the world famous Astrodome.

Saints rule out wide receivers Thomas, Callaway vs Bears

METAIRIE (AP) — The New Orleans Saints have ruled our receivers Michael Thomas and Marquez Callaway for Sunday’s game in Chicago.

New Orleans also has listed reserve guard Nick Easton out for for a second straight game because of a concussion.

Thomas, named AP 2019 Offensive Player of the Year after setting an NFL record with 149 catches in a season, is missing his sixth straight game because of a two separate inju ries sandwiches around a one-game suspension.

He has not played since injuring his ankle in the season opener, when he had three catches for 17 yards.

Seahawks have injury concerns on both sides for 49ers game

RENTON, Wash. (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks are still unsure how many healthy running backs they’ll have for Sunday’s matchup against San Francisco with three of the four on the active roster listed on the final injury report.

The Seahawks listed Chris Carson (foot) and Travis Homer (knee) as questionable, while Carlos Hyde (hamstring) was listed as doubtful on Friday. Carson and Hyde did not practice at all this week, while Homer was a limited participant on Friday.
