FEMA: Don’t pay company demanding pay for tarps

LAKE CHARLES (AP) — The Federal Emergency Management Agency is letting homeowners know that its Operation Blue Roof is free, and they should let authorities know if any company tries to make them pay.

The program installs tarps on damaged roofs to waterproof them until repairs can be made after a hurricane.

ELTON — For the past several weeks, residents have enjoyed a fall display of pumpkins, haystacks, scarecrow and autumncolored plants — but Tuesday morning, residents discovered the display had been vandalized.

Kimberly Captain, Executive Assistant to the Coushatta Chairman, said the destruction was first noticed by teachers on their way to work on Nov. 10.

“The cops came this morning, and both the tribal police and the Elton police did a report,” Captain said. “A concerned citizen also drove up to help fix it.”

Republican wins back US House seat in Southern California

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Republican Michelle Steel defeated first-term Rep. Harley Rouda on Tuesday in a Southern California district, only the second time in more than two decades that a GOP candidate in the state has defeated an incumbent Democrat.

Rouda captured Orange County’s 48th District in 2018 from longtime Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, part of a Democratic sweep of seven House seats in California that year.

Lawyer: Britney Spears fears father, wants him out of career

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Britney Spears fears her father and will not resume her career so long as he has power over it, her attorney said in court Tuesday.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny declined to suspend James Spears from his central role in the court conservatorship that has controlled his daughter’s life and career for 12 years as Britney Spears’ attorney Samuel D. Ingham III requested at the contentious hearing. But the judge said she would consider future petitions for his suspension or outright removal, which Ingham plans to file.

LAKE ARTHUR – After missing two weeks due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Lake Arthur Tigers (LA) were able to get back on the football field last Friday in a 35-7 loss to Welsh. The Tigers were super-competitive in the first half of football, and kept the game knotted at 7-7 until a late fumble in the endzone gave the Hounds a lead they would never relinquish. LA Head Coach Tarius Davis discussed being back in game action, along with his teams’ performance against Welsh.

Two Jennings men arrested for shooting

Two Jennings men were arrested Monday for being involved in a shooting that took place last week.

Traevon David Achane, 18, of Jennings, was charged with illegal possession of stolen firearms and attempted first-degree murder.

Also, Tregan Citizen, 18, of Jennings, was charged with illegal possession of stolen firearms and two counts of principals to attempted first-degree murder.

Jennings Police Department Chief Danny Semmes said the arrests were made in relation to a shooting that took place on Thursday, Nov. 5.
