High school students stay on A/B schedule

The Jeff Davis Parish School Board has said high school students should remain on an A/B schedule until possibly January in order to prevent campus closures amid the spread of COVID-19.

Saturday last day to register online

This Saturday, parish residents need to be registered to vote in order to cast their ballots in the Dec. 5 Open General Election.

The deadline to register to vote online at www.geauxvote.com or by downloading the GeauxVote app on a mobile device is Saturday, Nov. 14. The deadline to register by mail or in person was Nov. 4.

Two in custody, one wanted for vehicle fire

Two Austin men were arrested this week for setting a vehicle on fire in August.

On Monday, the State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFM), in conjunction with the Travis County Sheriff’s Office in Austin, Texas, arrested Emmanuelle Munoz Jusino, 43, and Darian K. Anderson, 47, both of Austin, Texas, and charged them with simple arson and criminal conspiracy.

Catholic Charities to be regular presence in JDP

Catholic Charities of Southwest Louisiana (CCSWLA) has begun a weekly food distribution in Jeff Davis Parish.

Every Tuesday for the past three weeks, the CCSWLA has set up its operation outside the Saint Mary’s Center in Jennings, located at 719 N. State St.

“We’ve been distributing in almost all the parishes that were left standing after Laura since two months ago,” said Rickard Newman, Volunteer Coordinator for CCSWLA. “We’re trying to help out as much as we can now, getting into long-term recovery.”

New bug attacks elephant ear plants

The recent Louisiana discovery of dying wild taro, or elephant ear, has LSU AgCenter scientists expressing concern.

In the first week of October 2020, John Hartgerink, a retired chemical engineer, found large patches of taro dying at the Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center in Baton Rouge. Observers believe the dieback is associated with the presence of a planthopper insect and perhaps plant pathogens.

WELSH - Friday night is senior night for the St. Louis Saints. When Westlake had to cancel as St. Louis’ opponent, the seniors of the Saints were faced with the possibility of having no senior night. Then Port Barre called in sick as the opponent for Welsh Friday night. That set up the second chance for the Greyhounds and the Saints to play this year. Their first playing date of October 9th was wiped out by Hurricane Delta.

Lady Hornets sweep pair at Fairview Tourney

FAIRVIEW – The defending Class B state runnerup Hathaway Lady Hornets (HHS) swept a pair of games at the Fairview High School Tournament over the weekend by defeating Glenmora and Plainview. The Lady Hornets are now 3-0 on the season, and were scheduled to play last night against Pitkin.

Lady Hornets: 58, Glenmora: 53

In what was a tale of two halves in this battle of Class B powers, HHS jumped out to a big halftime advantage and held off a ferocious Glenmora rally to earn the five-point win.

It’s with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Peggy Ann Seilhan announces her passing from this life on Nov. 8, 2020, at the age of 65.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Peggy was born at Oakland Airforce Base to Albert Seilhan and Jessie Mae Reynolds on Jan. 31, 1955. She worked as a cafeteria worker for 20 years. She loved baking and making rosaries. Her greatest joy came from the time she was able to spend with her family. She was a kind and loving person who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
