Funeral services for Lovick June Royer, 87, of Jennings was held at Matthews and Son Funeral Home in Jennings Saturday, Nov. 28, 2020, at 2 p.m., with Ashley Fontenot officiating.

A gathering of family and friends was held at the funeral home Saturday, Nov. 28, 2020, from 10 a.m. until the time of his service at 2 p.m.

Burial followed in Mermentau Cemetery.

‘Phantom’ is arrested and returned here

Lester Martin, famed "Phantom" robber, who made a sensational escape from the Jeff Davis Parish jail last July 25, was captured Friday night at Beaumont and returned here by O.J. Hebert, state patrolman, and Louis de Launday, deputy sheriff, Azenor Buller, sheriff, announced today.

The "phantom" was in a sullen frame of mind when brought back but to make assurance doubly sure that he would not again escape, the sheriff announced the boy was in solitary confinement in a felony cell at the jail.

Shop local this season

Many people are willing to wake up in the middle of the night, drive 30 minutes to an hour, then stand in line for another hour (or more) while waiting for a department store’s doors to unlock during the Christmas shopping season. How often, though, is the trip truly worth the time, travel, money and patience?

Instead of buying the same thing as everyone else in a bigname store, why not spend your money and find better quality and choices of items with small, locally-owned businesses?

WOMEN BEGIN CAMPAIGN FOR PROHIBITION

The campaign for Temperance is on. A concerted effort on the part of the women of Jefferson Davis Parish to retain said parish in dry column is being made through the parish organization of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union with headquarters at Elton.

The parish organization comprises the three unions of Elton, Welsh and Jennings, and with these three unions as a band of operations, the work of organization and mobilization of forces will be pushed to the remote bounds of the parish.

Crime comics to be off shelves by Christmas

The ordinance prohibiting the sale of "crime comic books" in Jennings will go into effect 30 days after publication in the official journal of the city, the Daily News, according to city attorney Grenese Jackson.

Publication is expected sometime next week which means that the "crime comic books" should be off the shelves in local stores before Christmas.

Closing down schools is not the solution during pandemic

In the suburbs of Philadelphia, Montgomery County’s Board of Health issued an order by unanimous vote last week to shut down all in=person learning at school for two weeks.

The reason for the shutdown is the reason every local, regional, and national official has used over the past eight or so months: COVID, corona, Wuhan, call it whatever you want. The pandemic is making decisions for us.

Jennings to have fine exhibition at World’s Fair in St. Louis

Jennings is certainly going to do her share in the Louisiana World's Fair exhibition at St. Louis. A letter was received this morning by the Commercial League requesting the League to send an exhibition, and already Secretary Cary is at work getting ready to make up the collection.

Elton soldier given medal

Pvt. Jesse L. Fontenot has been awarded an Army commendation medal for heroism in shooting down a Communist Viet Nam terrorist in downtown Saigon Thursday, the Associated Press reported today.

Fontenot waited several seconds until a grenade tossed at him had exploded, before he took aim and shot the terrorist off the bicycle on which he was trying to make a getaway.

The citation said Fontenot displayed "coolness, judgment and courage rarely found in even the most professional military policemen with many years experience."
