Court: Texas, Louisiana can end Planned Parenthood funding

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A federal appeals court ruled Monday that Texas and Louisiana can cut off Medicaid funding to Planned Parenthood clinics — a move supported by opponents of legal abortion, but opposed by advocates who said it affects a variety of non-abortion health services for low-income women.

The ruling was handed down by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans. While it expressly reversed decisions in Texas and Louisiana, it also affects Mississippi, which is under 5th Circuit jurisdiction. The issue is likely to go next to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Saints win 7th straight, beat Falcons in Hill’s first start

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Driving accurate throws downfield, exhibiting poise in the pocket and scrambling judiciously, Taysom Hill capitalized on his first true opportunity to make his case as a candidate to one day succeed recordsetting star Drew Brees as the Saints quarterback.

Hill rushed for two touchdowns and completed 78.3% of his passes for 233 yards in his first NFL start at quarterback, and New Orleans beat the Atlanta Falcons 24-9 on Sunday to extend its winning streak to seven games.

JENNINGS, WELSH HEAR NAMES CALLED IN PLAYOFFS

The Jennings Bulldogs and Welsh Greyhounds both their names called on Sunday when the LHSAA released their 2020 playoff brackets. As expected, Jennings will enter the postseason as the No. 1 overall seed in Class 3A, and will host No. 32 Erath at Jerry Simmons Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 28 at 5 pm. Welsh emerged as the No. 28 seed when the brackets were released, and will hit the road north to take on No. 5 North Caddo Friday at 7 pm.

Lady Dogs hammer CP behind Fontenot’s 24 points

The Jennings Lady Bulldogs blasted the Church Point Lady Bears this past week on the hardwood by a final of 80-36. The Lady Dogs are now 2-0 on the season after they opened with a big win over the East Beauregard Lady Trojans earlier last week. Jennings is now scheduled to participate the St. Thomas More Tournament this week.

Tigers fall in finale to Kaplan 41-7

LAKE ARTHUR – The Lake Arthur Tigers ended their regular season Friday night with a 41-7 defeat at the hands of the Kaplan Pirates on senior night. The Tigers end their regular season at 1-5 following the defeat, and fought through Covid-19 isolation earlier in their season. Despite the two-week layoff, the Tigers had a tough district slate by having to face Notre Dame, Welsh. The Tigers also dropped games to playoff teams in Pickering, Iota and then Class 3A Kaplan.

Graveside Services for Norman Nathan Fruge, 85, of Dry Creek were held in Greenwood Cemetery in Jennings Monday, Nov. 23, 2020, at 10 a.m.

A gathering of family and friends was held at Matthews and Son Funeral Home in Jennings Sunday, Nov. 22, 2020, from 3-6 p.m. Visitation resumed Monday, Nov. 23, 2020, from 8 a.m. until the time of his service at 10 a.m.

Norman was born in Evangeline on Oct. 16, 1935, to Joseph Fruge and Ida Deitz. He was called from this earthly life by his Heavenly Father on Nov. 19, 2020.

LA issues boil advisory

LAKE ARTHUR — A boil advisory was put in effect as a precautionary measure after repairs were done to the town’s water well last week.

According to city hall, the water was shut off on Wednesday, Nov. 18 in order to repair three leaks in the well. When town officials learned that the well was in need of repair, they announced to residents that the water would be turned off that day at 2 p.m. The announcement was delivered through the Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office (JDPSO) alert system and social media.

LDAF accepting industrial hemp license applications

The Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) is now accepting industrial hemp license applications for 2021.

“Any person growing, handling, transporting or processing industrial hemp or hemp seed is required to possess a current license issued by the LDAF,” said Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry Mike Strain, D.V.M.

Background checks and license fees are also required for all applicants. Applications for 2021 will be accepted at any time during the year.
