Board adopts device protection plan

The school board voted 9-2 last week in favor of offering an optional protection plan that parents can purchase to cover potential repair costs associated with Chromebooks that are being distributed to students across the parish.

Six thousand Chromebooks were purchased with funds from the Strong Start grant, allowing the district the means to put a device in each student’s hands. Central office personnel are currently working to set up the devices, which are being distributed first to students who are quarantined.

ROV: Early voting for Dec. 5 election slow so far

Early voting totals over the weekend showed slower turnout than in the presidential election.

According to Jeff Davis Registrar of Voters (ROV) Joann Blair, there were 43 in person ballots and 54 mail ballots cast Friday and Saturday during early voting.

Early voting will continue through Saturday, Nov. 28 with the exception of Thursday and Friday due to the Thanksgiving and Acadian Day holidays.

Early voting takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day at the ROV office located at 302 North Cutting Ave. in Jennings.

LCA topples Hounds 63-7

WELSH - The regular season for the Welsh Greyhounds came to an end Thursday night when they dropped a 63-7 decision to Lafayette Christian Academy in a District 6-2A contest. Now the Greyhounds await the possibility of entering the class 2-A non-select school state playoffs. Welsh was at number 26 before the contest, and should finish anywhere between 28 to 30. The top 32 teams make the playoffs.

Lake Arthur smacks Menard 77-34

RAPIDES – The Lake Arthur Lady Tigers (LA) upped their 2020 record to a perfect 3-0 Thursday night with a 77-34 thrashing of Menard High School at the Rapides Tournament. The Lady Tigers have continued to dominate through their first tests, using a balanced scoring attack and stingy defense.

High school back to 5 days in January

Parish high school students are slated to return to class five days a week beginning Jan. 4 under a plan approved by the school board Thursday.

Wreaths needed for Veterans Cemetery

The staff of the Southwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Jennings is reaching out to the public to secure wreaths for each veteran’s headstone this Christmas season as part of the Wreaths Across America program. The live green wreaths with red bows will be placed on a stand at all headstones and at the base of the Columbarium Wall on Saturday, Dec. 19 between 9 a.m. and noon. There will be no formal ceremony this year.

Board, PJ loan funds to assessor’s office

The Jeff Davis Parish School Board has agreed to loan the tax assessor’s office just over $35,000 until January.
