More vaccinations coming this week

The state is nearly doubling its effort to get residents vaccinated, after a very limited number of COVID-19 vaccinations were distributed last week.

HOUNDS FALL TO LCCP 78-62

WELSH – The Welsh Greyhounds did battle with a tough Lake Charles College Prep (LCCP) team Monday night at Greyhound Gymnasium, but came up on the short side by a count of 78-62. Will Green had a superb night for the Hounds in the defeat, draining 20 points in the contest.

Lacassine takes two wins over visiting Reeves

LACASSINE – The Lacassine Cardinals and Lady Cardinals continued to roll by defeating the Reeves Raiders and Lady Raiders in a pair of non-district games at John Juneau Gymnasium. The Cardinals topped the Raiders by a final of 58-30, while the Lady Cardinals handled the Lady Raiders by a final of 54-50.

Winter storm coats Southern states with blanket of snow

(AP) - A winter storm has brought snow to parts of the U.S. South, moving into Alabama and Tennessee on Monday after blowing across Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi the day before. The blanket of white falling across the region forced some school and government office closures, and fostered some play time for adults and children cooped up in the pandemic.

La. Supreme Court has new chief justice

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The Louisiana Supreme Court has a new chief justice.

John Weimer, 66, of Thibodaux, took the oath of office this month as the state’s 26th chief justice. A ceremony marking his investiture was held in New Orleans on Thursday. Weimer fills the seat vacated by Bernette Joshua Johnson, who retired Dec. 31 after serving 26 years on the high court.

Louisiana expands rollout of coronavirus vaccine to elderly

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana on Monday boosted distribution of coronavirus vaccines to the elderly, increasing the number of doses available to people aged 70 and older in the second week of eligibility and expanding the locations where they can get the shots to include every parish of the state.

The Department of Health’s list of pharmacies offering the vaccine to the elderly, which numbered 107 last week, grew to 209 pharmacies and health clinics across the 64 parishes this week.

$9M to Louisiana State Univ. to help Army ready for flooding

BATON ROUGE(AP) — The U.S. military has awarded Louisiana State University $9.3 million to help the military prepare to deal with climaterelated problems such as flooding and rising seas, the university said in a news release.

The money will be given out over the next four years and is part of a collaboration between LSU, the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Environmental Laboratory and the University of Delaware, the university said.

House speeding to impeach Trump for Capitol ‘insurrection’

WASHINGTON (AP) — Poised to impeach, the House sped ahead Monday with plans to oust President Donald Trump from office, warning he is a threat to democracy and pushing the vice president and Cabinet to act even more quickly in an extraordinary effort to remove Trump in the final days of his presidency.
