Suit challenging new charter boat rules OK’d as class action

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Six captains and five companies from Florida and Louisiana can represent others in a lawsuit challenging new federal regulations for nearly 1,300 charter boats across the Gulf of Mexico, a federal judge has ruled.

U.S. District Judge Susie Morgan certified the suit early this month as a class action for the people who take small groups of anglers into the Gulf. She rejected an argument that some charter captains support the regulations.

More evidence suggests COVID-19 was in US by Christmas 2019

NEW YORK (AP) — A new analysis of blood samples from 24,000 Americans taken early last year is the latest and largest study to suggest that the new coronavirus popped up in the U.S. in December 2019 — weeks before cases were first recognized by health officials.

The analysis is not definitive, and some experts remain skeptical, but federal health officials are increasingly accepting a timeline in which small numbers of COVID-19 infections may have occurred in the U.S. before the world ever became aware of a dangerous new virus erupting in China.

2010 murder conviction reversed in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A man convicted of seconddegree murder in New Orleans in 2010 won his freedom after prosecutors agreed to drop the case against him Monday.

The Innocence Project New Orleans says the conviction of Kaliegh Smith in a fatal 2007 shooting was thrown out last month. And court records show prosecutors agreed Monday to drop the case.

Stocks lower as inflation, retail sales data disappoints

(AP) — Stocks were moderately lower in morning trading Tuesday as investors reacted negatively to a report that once again showed inflation creeping higher as well as data that showed Americans slowed their spending last month.

The S&P 500 was down 0.2 percent as of 10:10 a.m. Eastern. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.4 percent and the Nasdaq Composite was down 0.4 percent as well.

Airbus-Boeing deal still leaves other US-EU rifts unresolved

BRUSSELS (AP) — The deal the United States and the European Union reached Tuesday to end their longrunning dispute over subsidies to Boeing and Airbus will mean the phase-out of billions in punitive tariffs. It will ease trans-Atlantic tensions. And it will allow the two sides to focus on a common economic threat: China.

Biden admin pushes plan to combat domestic terror

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration says it will enhance its analysis of threats from domestic terrorists, including the sharing of intelligence within law enforcement agencies, and will work with tech companies to eliminate terrorist content online as part of a nationwide strategy to combat domestic terrorism.

The National Security Council on Tuesday released the strategy plan, which comes more than six months after a mob of insurgents loyal to President Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol as Congress was voting to certify Joe Biden’s presidential win.

GOP bill would prohibit requiring any vaccination in Ohio

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — No employer, either public or private, could require employees to receive vaccinations under GOP legislation pending in the Ohio House. Also, workers could not be fired as a result of refusing.

The measure before the Republican-controlled House Health Committee has attracted multiple opponents of COVID-19 vaccines but goes further in addressing mandatory requirements for all vaccines, such as for the flu.
