Police: 4 dead, 4 hurt in shooting on Chicago’s South Side

CHICAGO (AP) — An argument in a house on Chicago’s South Side early Tuesday erupted into gunfire, leaving four women dead and four other people injured, police said.

The shooting happened at 5:42 a.m. in the city’s Englewood neighborhood, police said, and no arrests were immediately made. Police had few details about the victims, but it appeared that none of them were juveniles.

LSU ties for SEC lead with 49th team National Championship

BATON ROUGE — LSU claimed the school’s 49th national team championship — tied for the most of any school in the Southeastern Conference — over the weekend when the Tigers’ men’s track and field team lapped the field with an overwhelming victory at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

LSU ran away with the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Championships, recording 84 points to finish well ahead of second place Oregon, who scored 53 points.

Smith, Taylor homer in Dodgers’ 3-1 win over Phillies

LOS ANGELES (AP) — When Will Smith decided to praise every Dodgers reliever who came through against the Phillies, the catcher had a lengthy list to remember.

“DP (David Price) coming in, Joe (Kelly), Blake (Treinen), Victor (González), and Kenley (Jansen) closing it out, and Jimmy (Nelson),” Smith said. “They were all really good. They pounded the zone, put guys away, pitched out of a couple of jams. They were great tonight.”

Mickelson at home and running out of time for US Open title

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Phil Mickelson accepted a special exemption from the USGA with reason to believe this might be his last shot to finally win a U.S. Open.

Now he gets five more years, courtesy of his stunning victory last month at the PGA Championship that made him the oldest winner in 161 years of the majors.

The clock is still ticking, though.

Mickelson turns 51 on the eve of the U.S. Open, and Lefty is leaving nothing to chance. He took a few days to celebrate his sixth major title, and then it was time to get to work.

Town of Elton under boil advisory

ELTON — A boil advisory was put in place for the town after a leak was discovered in the water tower.

Due to potentially hazardous conditions, town officials are having issues with fixing the leak.

“Repairs cannot be made to the water tower because it is not currently accessible,” said town clerk Theresa Fontenot. “We are in contact with a contractor to fix it, but because of cables from a satellite, we have to make sure that it is safe for them to climb the ladder up to the tower first.”

COA to partially reopen to public

The Jeff Davis Parish Council on Aging (COA) is preparing to reopen to the public on July 6, after being given the go ahead from the Governor’s Office of Elderly Affairs (GOEA.)

According to Helen Langley, Executive Director of the Council on Aging everything except the meal site will be open.
