An inmate at the parish jail escaped from the hospital while undergoing a routine procedure.

Bryan Wayne Vincent, 34, of Jennings was originally booked into the parish jail on Oct. 1 for resisting an officer, obstruction of justice, possession of CDS schedule IV and simple escape.

On Thursday, Oct. 7, at approximately 4 p.m., Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office (JDSO) received information of an escaped inmate from the Jennings American Legion Hospital.

At least two dead in Calif. plane crash that burned homes

SANTEE, Calif. (AP) — A small plane crashed in a densely populated San Diego suburb Monday, killing at least two people, including a UPS driver, and leaving a trail of destruction that sent neighbors scrambling to help neighbors. At least two others were injured.

Witnesses described a retired couple being rescued from one of two homes that were destroyed in Santee, a largely residential suburb of 50,000 people. Ten other homes were damaged.

Several vehicles, including a delivery truck, were also torched.

Southwest cancels hundreds more flights, denies sickout

DALLAS (AP) — Southwest Airlines canceled more than 350 flights Monday following a weekend of major disruptions that it blamed on bad weather and air traffic control issues. The pilots union accused the company of a botched response to what it said would have been a minor challenge for other airlines.

The third straight day of canceled and delayed flights left passengers stranded and steaming from California to the East Coast.

Moderna has no plans to share COVID-19 vaccine recipe

ROME (AP) — Moderna has no plans to share the recipe for its COVID-19 vaccine because executives have concluded that scaling up the company’s own production is the best way to increase the global supply, the company’s chairman said Monday.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Noubar Afeyan also reiterated a pledge Moderna made a year ago not to enforce patent infringement on anyone else making a coronavirus vaccine during the pandemic.

Merck asks US FDA to authorize promising anti-virus pill

WASHINGTON (AP) — Drugmaker Merck asked U.S. regulators Monday to authorize its pill for treating COVID-19 in what would add an entirely new and easy-to-use weapon to the world’s arsenal against the pandemic.

If cleared by the Food and Drug Administration — a decision that could come in a matter of weeks — it would be the first pill shown to treat the illness. All other FDA-backed treatments against COVID-19 require an IV or injection.

Woman charged in infant daughter’s death

THIBODAUX (AP) — A Louisiana woman has been charged in connection with the death of her infant daughter, authorities said.

Kageionna Butler of Houma was arrested Sunday and charged with principal to second-degree murder, Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre said in a news release Monday. The child’s father, 26-year-old Jake Guidry, was charged with second-degree murder on Sept. 28.

Child, 6, dies in ‘campfire’ started in a play fort

GEISMAR (AP) — Authorities say a 6-year-old boy died after he and two siblings, ages 9 and 4, were playing with fire in a “fort” made from a concrete stairway on a flatbed trailer. The children used a lighter Sunday afternoon to set fire to “a small pile of combustible objects as though it was a campfire,” the State Fire Marshal’s Office said in a news release Monday.

They had covered a hollow prefabricated concrete stairway as their play fort. “While the other two children were able to escape unharmed, the 6-year-old was trapped and died,” the statement said.

State corrections lieutenant arrested for pepper spray use

PLAQUEMINE (AP) — A state corrections lieutenant has been arrested on a charge accusing him of inappropriately using pepper spray on an inmate.

Juan Harris, 49, of Baton Rouge was arrested Friday on a charge of aggravated battery, according to a Department of Corrections news release.

Police: Louisiana trooper, woman killed in shooting rampage

BATON ROUGE (AP) — A Louisiana state trooper was killed by a man who authorities believe also fatally shot another person and wounded three others across multiple parishes, the state police said.

Master Trooper Adam Gaubert, a 19-year veteran of the force, was ambushed in his patrol vehicle Saturday near Prairieville, according to a Louisiana State Police news release. The suspect, Matthew Mire, 31, was taken into custody that night after a daylong manhunt.
