Melissa Doise 5K to be virtual event

The 12th annual Melissa Doise Hope for the Miracle 5K Run/Walk will be virtual for the second year in a row.

Melissa Doise, of Hathaway, battled breast cancer for 10 years before succumbing to the disease. Her friend and the Melissa Doise Foundation President Kim Precht has been raising money in her memory for the last 12 years.

In previous years, the day of the race was full of activities, but with COVID-19, Precht said it made sense to keep it virtual so they’d still be able to hold their yearly fundraiser.

Historical building sees new life as arts, tech center

Renovations are nearly complete for a new arts and technology center expected to bring new life to an old building.

According to Zigler Foundation President Greg Marcantel, the new building is located on the corner of Main and Market Streets, across from City Hall. It is located in the exact spot of the Citizens’ Bank, founded in 1895.

Twelve girls representing seven Jefferson Davis Parish high schools will be vying for the title of 2021 Jeff Davis Parish Fair Queen. The annual pageant is scheduled to be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, October 7, in the arena at the Jefferson Davis Parish Fairgrounds.

According to Queen Chairman Brandi LaBouve, these young ladies competing for the title of Jeff Davis Parish Fair Queen are juniors and seniors at their respective high schools. These contestants were selected either by the student body or through a local school pageant.

Alpha Delta Kappa was founded in 1947 to recognize and support the professional efforts of outstanding women educators.

In the past two years alone, Alpha Delta Kappa Members have given nearly $12 million in monetary and other gifts, nearly $2 million in scholarships and have provided more than 2 million hours of volunteer service to their communities.

Originally elected as a Democrat, Guillory switched to the Republican Party in June of 2013.

Dogs drop contest to No. 2 Sterlington

STERLINGTON - The No. 2-ranked Sterlington Panthers showed their strength Friday night as they demolished the Jennings Bulldogs 45-14 in a rainy showdown. The Panthers took a 14-0 lead before the Dogs could take an offensive snap, and never looked back in building a big 35-7 halftime advantage. Sterlington stayed perfect on the season at 5-0, while Jennings dropped to 1-4.

Lynn, Abreu lift White Sox over Tigers for 5th straight win

CHICAGO (AP) — Lance Lynn pitched one-run ball over five innings, José Abreu homered and drove in four runs, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 8-1 Friday night for their fifth straight win.

Tim Anderson added four hits for the AL Central champions as they prepare for next week’s AL Division Series against the Houston Astros. Chicago entered the day trailing the Astros by two games in the race for home-field advantage.

Blue Roof program extended to Oct. 15

BATON ROUGE (AP) — The Blue Roof program that supplies and installs tarps onto storm damaged roofs as a temporary fix until repairs can be made has been extended until Oct. 15. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said the free program was to have ended Thursday, but because of demand they decided to extend the deadline.

The goal of the program is to allow people to continue to live in their homes while they wait for roofers and contractors to become available.

With more than 100,000 homes damaged, the Blue Roof program has experienced delays on its phone lines.
