Texting scam targeting elderly community

Texting and phone scams have been targeting the elderly community recently.

Mitzi Fruge, a senior citizen of Jennings, recently received a call from a local phone number that seemed suspicious.

“It was an automated call claiming to be the social security office,” said Fruge. “I was told if I did not press the number “1” my social security number would be blocked. I knew better because Jennings does not have a local social security office. I called the number back and it was the Jeff Davis Parish District Attorney’s office phone number that was being used.”

First Baptist Church of Jennings wants to remind JDP residents their food pantry is still available for families in need.

The church partnered with Second Harvest Food Ministry’s, Feed America program to operate a food pantry offering non-perishable commodities to low-income families.

“The church has participated in this program for six years,” said Minister of Education Brian Wells. “When we started doing this, we were serving about 130 families. In a very short time, we were serving close to 700 families.”

Tropical larvae found in fruit shipped from Costa Rica to US

GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) — The U.S. government ordered the destruction a $15,000 shipment of pineapples from Costa Rica after agriculture inspectors in Mississippi found butterfly larvae that they said could be harmful.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a news release Monday that inspectors from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service found the Saunders 1850 larvae Sept. 2 at the Port of Gulfport.

Bennett James Hanks

Mr. Bennett James Hanks, 69, of Jennings passed away Friday, Oct. 1, 2021, at his residence.

A visitation for Mr. Hanks was held Monday, Oct. 4, from 3-9 p.m., with cremation to follow.

He was born in Jennings to Willard and Alice Broussard Hanks on July 5, 1952.

After his high school graduation, he went to work as a welder in the construction industry. Mr. Hanks enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing pool and golf.

Nola Noelani Apo Melton

Mrs. Nola Noelani Apo Melton, 84, passed away peacefully in her residence on Sept. 27, 2021, surrounded by her loving family.

The family is respecting her wishes with cremation under the direction of Miguez Funeral Home.

Mrs. Melton was born Oct. 18, 1936, on the Island of Maui, Hawaii. She was raised and lived there for nearly 25 years.

She then married the love of her life, James J. Melton, and moved to California, then eventually moved to Louisiana. She enjoyed playing bingo with her family and friends and often went fishing and crabbing, as well.
