The family and friends of Marie Pauline Stanford are mourning the loss of their loved one who was called from this life on Sept. 27, 2021, at the age of 77.

Memorial services will be announced at a later date.

Marie was born in Beaumont, Texas, to Jules Menou, II, and Susie Ritter on Sept. 4, 1944.

Marie was a caretaker for the State School for many years. She dedicated her life to taking care of her family. Marie was a loving and generous wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and sister.

A little parish with a big heart

The south is a place that prides itself on hospitality but the generosity found in Southwest Louisiana (SWLA) is something all on its own.

Not long ago residents of Jeff Davis Parish found themselves in need due to the unfortunate circumstances of back-to-back hurricanes. Some are still rebuilding and have yet to go back to life as normal.

Jeff Davis residents were given a chance to repay the areas affected by Hurricane Ida for everything they did for SWLA last year.

Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,

I live in Lake Arthur. In August, I heard the monthly rate for garbage pickup would be increased. I had no problem with the increase, but I also heard that tree branches would no longer be picked up. This concerned me as I often have tree branches that fall during wind storms and heavy rain. I also have no way of hauling tree branches to Welsh. With that in mind, I decided to attend the City Council meeting on Sept. 1.

A recent study recently revealed that A our state ranks second-to-last when it comes to taking the simple and preventative measures necessary to keep our fourlegged friends safe from heartworms.

Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease and is caused by foot-long worms that live in the heart, lungs and associated blood vessels of affected pets, causing severe lung disease, heart failure and damage to other organs in the body.

One of my many duties at my “day job” is serving as point man for our workplace safety program.

Since I have a hair-trigger for gabbing about bloodborne pathogens, bodily fluids, corrosives, and other appetizing subjects, we no longer have a Christmas party or even a holiday party. No, it’s a “Watch out – there may be a pop quiz on lock-out/tagout procedures for mistletoe!” party.

Dr. Louis Shirley home after Korea

Dr. Louis Shirley is home after spending nine months in the Far East, including 3 1/2 months in Korea, and "it is good to be back," he states.

The Jennings physician, who was separated officially yesterday with the rank of lieutenant in the Navy, spent the 3 1/2 months in Korea with a Marine division.

HEALTH WORKERS’ ANTI-VAX SPOUSES FACE SURCHARGE

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Louisiana’s largest health system is ratcheting up pressure to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

Ochsner Health told employees it will charge them a monthly premium of $200 if a spouse or domestic partner covered under an Ochsner health plan is not vaccinated, The Times-Picayune/New Orleans Advocate reports.

Ochsner has said all employees must be vaccinated by October 29 to keep their jobs.

The Fair is back!

The annual Jeff Davis Parish Fair is coming back to Jennings Oct. 5-9, bringing family friendly fun to the parish.

The four-day event kicks off 8 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5 and comes to a close at 11 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9.

Fair week is a time when residents of the parish and visitors gather to enjoy days filled with food, fun and carnival rides.

The Mighty Thomas Carnival will be set up and ready to entertain everyone from Wednesday to Saturday.

Art from rubble

Emily Romero is well-known for her tireless efforts to provide resources to the Southwest Louisiana community in the aftermath of the hurricanes last year, but what many may not know is she is still hard at work behind the scenes. This time, she is using her skills as an artist to make use of the rubble that remained after two back-to-back storms devastated the region in 2020.

For her unique creations, Romero uses recycled wood to construct crosses, churches, as well as Louisiana-themed designs, which have become highly soughtafter all across the southwest region of the state.
