Key reason for supply shortages: Americans keep spending

DETROIT (AP) — Take a step back from the picked-over store shelves, the stalled container ships and the empty auto showrooms, and you’ll find a root cause of the shortages of just about everything.

Even as the pandemic has dragged on, U.S. households flush with cash from stimulus checks, booming stock markets and enlarged home equity have felt like spending freely again — a lot. And since consumer demand drives much of the U.S. and global economies, high demand has brought goods shortages to the U.S. and much of the world.

Trump ally Bannon taken into custody on contempt charges

WASHINGTON (AP) — Steve Bannon, a longtime ally of former President Donald Trump, surrendered to federal authorities on Monday to face contempt charges after defying a subpoena from a House committee investigating January’s insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

Bannon was taken into custody Monday morning and is expected to appear in court later in the afternoon. The 67-year-old was indicted on Friday on two counts of criminal contempt – one for refusing to appear for a congressional deposition and the other for refusing to provide documents in response to the committee’s subpoena.

Austria locks down the unvaccinated amid a surge of COVID-19

BERLIN (AP) — Austria took what its leader called the “dramatic” step Monday of implementing a nationwide lockdown for unvaccinated people who haven’t recently had COVID-19, perhaps the most drastic of a string of measures being taken by European governments to get a massive regional resurgence of the virus under control.

Iota tops Brusly 17-7 in upset victory

BRUSLY – The old adage of “defense wins championships” was put to the test Friday and the Iota Bulldogs rose to the occasion.

After giving up 74 yards and a touchdown on just four plays late in the first quarter, the Bulldogs’ defensive unit limited the No. 14-seeded Panthers to just five first downs and 61 yards the rest of the night in a thrilling 17-7 upset victory.

The victory earned the No. 19-seeded Bulldogs a home game this week when they will entertain No. 3 St. Martinville at 7 p.m. on Friday.

St. Michael edges out Lady Dogs in volleyball Division III Quarterfinals

LAFAYETTE — Iota’s first trip to the State Volleyball tournament since 2016 came to an abrupt halt Thursday with a straight-sets loss to No. 4 St. Michael in a Division III quarterfinal contest at the Cajundome.

The fifth-seeded Lady Dogs, who have advanced to the state tournament quarterfinal round eight times since 2002, ended their season with a record of 23-19.

“Our team was pretty awesome this season,” said Iota coach Meredith Hebert. “We worked together well. Some games didn’t fall in our favor, but for the most part, we were all pretty sound.”

Beckham, Miller to make Rams debuts vs. 49ers

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Odell Beckham Jr. and Von Miller are active and will make their debuts for the Los Angeles Rams for their game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Beckham was signed last week and Miller was acquired two weeks ago in a trade from Denver.

Both will play Monday night against the Niners with Beckham helping replace injured receiver Robert Woods.

Woods is inactive after going down with a seasonending knee injury in practice last week.

Elton Police approved for pay raise

ELTON — Existing Elton Police Department (EPD) employees will see an increase in pay after the town’s last council meeting.

Elton Police Chief Bruce Lemelle petitioned the town council recently to vote on a $1.25 an hour raise for the officers and a 25 cent raise for dispatchers. The raise was approved 2-1 in favor of the pay increase.

Lemelle said he was happy to get the extra money for his employees.

“I’m glad they got something,” he said. “The council is aware they don’t make a lot of money and I think it’s enough for now.”

Election results announced

Parish results are in for the Nov. 13 Primary Election held Saturday.

Four statewide constitutional amendment propositions were the only items on the ballot for voters in Jeff Davis Parish. Only the second proposition passed statewide.

According to the Louisiana Secretary of State (SOS), the first proposition, which would centralize local tax collection failed to pass, garnering only 48 percent of the vote. JDP residents also failed to support the amendment, with 56 percent of registered voters voting against it.

CHIPS to perform Dickens’ classic ‘A Little Scrooge’

CHIPS (Chip Off the Old Block) Little Theatre group is preparing to perform their adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic, A Christmas Carol. The production is called “Little Scrooge” and is a kid-friendly, comedic take of the more serious original.

Director Allie Breaux is making her directorial debut this year.

“This is my first year with the kids,” she said. “I love it. It’s exciting to see the kids get into character. They are doing a phenomenal job.”

The age group making up the Little Chips group is third through fourth grades according to Breaux.
