Local club to host holiday decorating contest

In order to get everyone into the holiday spirit, Jennings Garden Club is hosting a Christmas decoration contest for city businesses.

“If your business is brightly decorated and looks appealing, that will make it stand out,” said Jennings Garden Club President Eulalie Miller.”It’s good for business plus it just makes people feel good when they notice the lights and other festive decor all around town.”

Unlike contests held in previous years, Miller said this year’s competition is not limited to only businesses located in historic downtown Jennings.

ELTON — Elton Elementary School (EES) ended their Veteran’s Day program with an official dedication of the gymnasium to late school administrator Wesley L. Livingston Sr.

Livingston served as principal of Katie B. Thomas High School and Elton Junior High School until his retirement in 1978. He was also a Technician Sergeant in the U.S. Army during WWII. There is also a scholarship in his name and the Town of Elton renamed a street for him and his late wife because of his positive influence in the community.

Local church collecting shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child

Every year, Samaritan’s Purse opens more than 4,000 drop-off locations across the country in the third week of November as part of the organization’s Operation Christmas Child National Collection Week.

Churches around Southwest Louisiana will be passing out empty shoeboxes Nov. 15-22 to be filled with small toys, hygiene items and school supplies as a means of reaching out to children in their own communities with the news of Jesus Christ.

During the October meeting of Knights of Columbus (KC) Council 2012 from Our Lady Help of Christians (OLHC) Parish in Jennings, the family of Jeremy and Christel Doucet was recognized as the Council’s Family of the Month for September 2021.

Bertaut Speaks to Welsh Rotary Club

Michael Bertaut is the Healthcare Economist and Exchange Coordinator at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana. He was the guest speaker at Welsh Rotary meeting on Thursday, Oct. 21. He spoke about annual enrollment tips for health insurance and Medicare. 

Crown rot disease detected in La. strawberries

BATON ROUGE — Louisiana growers have not yet finished planting this year’s strawberry crop, and a disease called crown rot has already been detected in a commercial field.

This disease is caused by a soil-borne, fungallike microorganism genus called Phytophthora. Sometimes it is called water mold.

Phytophthora is known as “the plant destroyer.” The name originates from the Greek words phytón, meaning plant, and phthorá, meaning destruction.

‘Menopause’ has both specific and general meanings

Dear Doctors: Can you please talk about the change of life for women? I have two grown daughters, and one of them went through it at a very young age. Why would that be? This part of a woman’s life doesn’t get a lot of attention, but it seems like it’s important.
