It is with heavy hearts that we share with you that our father, grandfather, uncle, brother-in-law and friend, Wilbert Gilbeaux, Sr., passed away peacefully on Nov. 9, 2021.

Funeral services will be held at Union Baptist Church in Jennings at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 12, 2021. The viewing will be held from 8-11 a.m.

Burial will follow in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cemetery.

Wilbert was born in Lake Arthur on Sept. 20, 1936, to Harry Gilbeaux, Sr., and Mamie Keogh Gilbeaux.

Chiefs appear open to adding Beckham to wide receiver group

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs coach Andy Reid wouldn’t say Wednesday whether the reigning AFC champs were pursuing Odell Beckham Jr.

Then again, he didn’t say they weren’t.

Beckham became a free agent Tuesday after the wide receiver’s acrimonious split with the Browns, and the Chiefs — with star quarterback Patrick Mahomes — are among the destinations that he’s rumored to be considering.

SEC leaders Georgia, Alabama gearing up for final challenges

(AP) — Top-ranked Georgia and No. 3 Alabama appear headed for a showdown in the Southeastern Conference title game.

That scenario follows the preseason script. But before the powerhouse programs clash on Dec. 4 in Atlanta they must clear a few remaining hurdles in the season’s final weeks for the showdown to have national championship implications.

Boras: MLB cancer of trading veterans helped Braves win

CARLSBAD, Calif. (AP) — Baseball’s most influential agent said the sport was the victim of a “competitive cancer” caused by teams unloading veterans to accumulate draft picks and said the Atlanta Braves’ World Series title was a direct result of others’ tanking.

Speaking Wednesday at the general managers’ meetings, Scott Boras backed the demands of the players’ association for changes in the collective bargaining agreement that expires Dec. 1. The sport is braced for a lockout that would be baseball’s ninth work stoppage but first since 1995.

Brown carries Louisiana-Lafayette past West Florida 81-47

LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — Jordan Brown registered 14 points, seven rebounds and three blocks as Louisiana-Lafayette rolled past West Florida 81-47 on Tuesday night.

Kobe Julien had 12 points and three blocks for Louisiana-Lafayette (1-0). Kentrell Garnett added 10 points. Theo Akwuba had eight rebounds.

Darrin Jenkins had 10 points for the Argonauts. Daniel Sofield added six rebounds. David Petit-Homme had seven rebounds.

Davis scores 18 to lift SMU past McNeese St. 86-62

Parish polling locations announced

Saturday is the Open Primary Election for four constitutional amendments and voters should find out where they must go to cast their ballot.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13.

Unlike during the early voting period, all eligible voters must vote at their assigned polling location in the parish on election day.

According to the Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office, the list of locations by precinct is as follows:

Center, 701 8th Street, Lake Arthur

DA hosts food drive to stock COA pantry

District Attorney Elliot Cassidy is hosting a food drive to benefit the Jeff Davis Parish (JDP) Council on Aging (COA) food pantry.

“People here have big hearts and have donated so much to our neighbors in Southeast Louisiana impacted by Hurricane Ida,” he said. “However we must not forget about our own citizens.”

COA Director Helen Langley agreed donations have dropped significantly due to items being diverted to other areas of the state affected by the hurricane.

Volunteer group meeting needs of area veterans

Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is a volunteer group that works to help meet the needs of veterans in the community. The group met recently to tour the Southwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery as a part of their annual program.

DAR is a nonprofit, nonpolitical organization founded in 1890 with the mission of promoting historic preservation, education and patriotism. There are over 190,000 members in 3,000 chapters across the world.

Womanless Beauty Pageant to benefit area organizations

LAKE ARTHUR — A local woman coordinates Womanless Beauty Pageant to give back to organizations who assist members of the community.

Fundraiser organizer Tiffany Vincent decided to hold the fundraiser as a way to give back after her aunt, Genevia Duhon, received assistance during her battle with kidney cancer.

Vincent said the event will be the inaugural pageant in what she hopes is a longstanding tradition.
