(AP) — While five candidates vying for the Louisiana governor seat will be gathering next week for the state's first major televised gubernatorial debate, early GOP frontrunner Jeff Landry won't be there.

During the Second World War, the United States government encouraged the American people to participate in scrap drives, a way for everyone to contribute to the war effort. By recycling unused or unwanted metal for example, the government could build ships, airplanes and other equipment needed to win the war.

Citizens were asked to scour their homes and businesses for spare metal. From pots and pans to metal toys, to car bumpers, to farm equipment- any metal was considered valuable. Communities melted down Civil War cannons

1942 - By September 10 every service establishment covered by regulation No. 165 is expected to have turned in a statement of its prices to the Jeff Davis Parish War Price and Rationing Board. All must report to the Court House in Jennings, according to an announcement by Earl C. Miller, Chairman of the local board.

MEETING TO BE HELD IN OBERLIN ON IRRIGATION PROJECT

1934 - A big mass meeting will be held at Oberlin at 3 p. m. Monday by farmers from Jeff Davis, Allen, Beauregard and Evangeline parishes to push plans for the big irrigation association which will give a guaranteed supply of fresh water at all times. Farmers of these parishes are seeking to fulfill this project’s aim of providing fresh water for this section at all times of the year to make rice farming safe from the dangers of salt water which annually besets them.

K. OF C. 15TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATED

1934 - The 15th anniversary of the establishment of the order of Knights of Columbus in Jennings and local members and friends will celebrate with a banquet at the lodge home, above Robert’s store tonight.

HUNTERS WARNED THEY CANNOT SHOOT RICE BIRDS

1940 - Jennings and Jeff Davis hunters were warned today that they are liable to arrest if they attemp to shoot the “Blue Peter” commonly known as rice birds, now protected by the federal game law.
