HATHAWAY — A family in the Hathaway area decided to conduct a series of science experiments to see how the recent heat wave was affecting the area.

BIDEN WANTS EXTRA $4B FOR DISASTER RELIEF

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House will seek another $4 billion to address natural disasters as part of its supplemental funding request, bringing the total to $16 billion. The request is a sign wildfires, flooding and hurricanes intensifying during a period of climate change are imposing higher costs on U.S. taxpayers. President Joe Biden initially requested $12 billion in extra funding for the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s disaster relief fund. An Office of Management and Budget spokesperson says the fires in Hawaii and Louisiana as well as flooding in Vermont and Hurricane Idalia striking Southeastern states mean $16 billion is needed.

HUNTERS GET STATE TAX BREAK DURING 2ND AMENDMENT SALES TAX HOLIDAY

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Purchases of firearms, ammunition and a wide range of hunting supplies are exempt from state sales tax beginning Friday as part of the Louisiana Second Amendment Weekend Sales Tax Holiday. The state Department of Revenue said in a news release Tuesday that the exemption runs through Sunday. In addition to firearms and ammunition, it covers hunting supplies like archery items, hunting apparel and certain types of knives. The holiday was reinstated by lawmakers this year. It had been suspended since 2018.

Dogs, Wampus Cats set to tangle tonight

The Jennings Bulldogs (JHS) will get another big test right off the bat when the Leesville Wampus Cats come to town Friday night for the 2023 season opener. The two teams played twice last season, once to open the year and also in the regional round of the Division II playoffs. Leesville won both contests, but the Dogs have revenge on their minds.

Jennings is coming off a good jamboree showing against a pair of good teams in Iowa and Sam Houston. JHS Head Coach Bret Fuselier discussed his squad’s effort, and what he wants to see in the future.
