Still time to purchase barbecue fundraiser tickets

Knights of Columbus (KC) chapter 2012 is preparing to hold its annual barbecue dinner sale, raising funds to assist with its mission of helping others throughout the community, as well as the state.

The Second Chance Job Fair, hosted by Louisiana Workforce Commission, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, April 3 at the Jeff Davis Parish Multi-Purpose Building, located at 810 South Lake Arthur Ave. in Jennings.

1926 - Last Friday marked a new era in water transportation from Jennings and the Jennings oil field, when the new tug “Gertrude,: owned by G. B. Zigler Company of Jennings, steamed out from its loading docks at the Jaenke Bridge with 5,000 barrels of oil in tow for delivery to A. Kaplan at Abbeville. The “Gertrude” has 125H.P. engines.

1926 - “ Victory,” the Easter Cantata being sung by the Philharmonic Society at the W. C. T. U. Auditorium this Sunday nite, is said to be the most ambitious program the organization has ever attempted. Music lovers may look forward to the event with pleasant anticipation. The program follows, which will begin at 8 o’clock. All churches of the city are giving over their services and will attend the sacred concert.

CARGO SHIP HAD ENGINE MAINTENANCE IN PORT BEFORE IT COLLIDED WITH BALTIMORE BRIDGE

BALTIMORE (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard says the cargo ship that crashed into and collapsed a bridge in Baltimore underwent “routine engine maintenance” in port beforehand. U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral Shannon Gilreath said at a news conference Wednesday that authorities had been informed that the ship was going to undergo the maintenance. He added that they were not informed of any problems. The ship collided into a support pillar early Tuesday, causing the span to buckle into the river. The bodies of two of six workers who plunged into the water were recovered earlier in the day. The others are presumed dead.
