Cardinals claim 6-B title with 12-2 win over BC

The Lacassine Cardinals claimed the district 6-B championship on Saturday by defeating the Bell City Bruins for the second time in a week by a final of 12-2. The Cards won the regular season meeting 14-7, but earned the 10-run rule win in the league tournament held at the Jennings Recreation Department. Lacassine used the superb pitching of Cobee Papillion and Ray Conner to hold the potent Bruin attack to just a pair of runs on four hits, while the Lacassine offense smoked out nine hits and took advantage of six Bell City errors. Papillion went 3.1 on the mound and allowed a pair of runs on two hits and struck out four. Ray Conner came out of the pen to go 1.1 and allowed no runs on just a pair of hits and fanned two.

Lady Tigers outlast Welsh 19-13 in district play

LAKE ARTHUR — The Lake Arthur Lady Tiger softball team celebrated Senior Night when they hosted the parish rival Welsh Lady Greyhounds Friday. Lake Arthur led 5-1, but Welsh would tie the game 5 all. Lake Arthur would take a 13-5 lead, but Welsh would again rally to tie the game 13 all. Lake Arthur would take a 19-13 lead in the 6th inning and get the 19-14 win in the final district game for both teams.

Louisiana proposes bill similar to Texas’ migrant arrest law

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana’s Republican-controlled Senate advanced a bill Monday that would empower state and local law enforcement to arrest and jail people in the state who entered the U.S. illegally, similar to embattled legislation in Texas.

The 2024 total solar eclipse which occurred yesterday was barely visible through the cloudy skies of Jeff Davis Parish. However, Scott Patterson and Nikki Cohan of the Ennis News, a sister paper of Jennings Daily News, were able to get some wonderful photos. Ennis is located just south of Dallas, Texas, one of the top destinations in the Path of Totality.

The next total solar eclipse visible from the U.S. is predicted to occur on August 23, 2044.

A new challenge for parish Chambers and local businesses — called the Clean Biz Partnership — was created by Keep Louisiana Beautiful and the Louisiana Chamber of Commerce Executives (LACCE) to help tackle litter in Louisiana parishes. The goal is to preserve the beauty of Louisiana and help businesses thrive.

Two area men arrested in Acadia Parish

EVANGELINE — Deputies with the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office recently responded to a call that led to the arrest of a Jennings man and an Evangeline man on burglary charges.

Art in the Park event accepting vendors

LAKE ARTHUR — The town is holding its annual Art in the Park gathering of homemade crafts, retail goods, food and music for residents to come out to shop and enjoy at the newly renovated Lake Arthur Park near the lake front.
