I don’t know why I do this to myself. Where is that damn dictionary?

“Arma virumque cano…” What the hell can that mean? How would one find out? Why should I care?

In moments of self-seeking, of trying to find myself, I lose myself in Derek Walcott, the recipient of the 1992 Nobel Prize for Literature.

Knights Donate to Special Olympics

Nov. 8, Donald Kratzer (right) from Knights of Columbus Council 2012 of Our Lady Help of Christians Parish in Jennings presented a $1,646.68 donation on behalf of the Council to Bobby Matt (left) of the Jeff Davis Special Olympics.The Council has also made a donation of $548.90 to the St. Mary’s Residential Training School in Alexandria to support its Special Olympics projects. The Knights collected the money Oct. 26 at the intersection of U.S. 90 and La. 26 during their annual Tootsie Roll Drive.

Fenton Elementary welcomes heroes

Fenton Elementary School held a Veterans Day program Monday, Nov. 11. The guest speaker, Sgt. Vernon O’Quinn, read a proclamation to the audience from Gov. John Bel Edwards. Students in all grades performed to honor veterans that attended, as well as those who were lost in war. Principal Frances LeBlanc led the ceremony.

Welsh schools thank veterans

On Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2019, Welsh High School (WHS) and Welsh Elementary School (WES) conducted their annual Veterans Day Ceremony at the WHS gymnasium.

The Honor Guard from James O. Hall American Legion Post of Jennings posted the colors to begin the ceremony.

Teachers of the Year Cody Gueringer and Chelsey Hetzel led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance. The WHS Band played the National Anthem.

November Gardens Applauded

The Jennings Garden Club recently announced the November winners for Garden of the Month. The business Garden of the Month went to Our Lady Immaculate School. Principal David Dupuis is pictured. Meanwhile, Marcia Pfeiffer’s garden on Roberta Avenue took the title for residential Garden of the Month.

Jennings Rotary Club welcomed Amy Donald as its guest speaker Nov. 12. Donald (pictured with Rotarian Wendell Miller) is the executive director at Autism Services of Southwest Louisiana, which provides 24/7 housing and support for adults with autism.

Mayor recognizes Palliative Care Month

Jennings Mayor Henry Guinn, along with members of the Louisiana Hospice and Palliative Care, have proclaimed November as National Hospice and Palliative Care Month. Hospice care provides pain management, symptom control, psychosocial support and spiritual care to patients and their families when a cure is not possible.

Joining the mayor were chaplain Chris Davy, CNA Gloria Miller, bereavement coordinator Rose Johnson, executive director Holly Miller, volunteer coordinator George Houssiere, patient care representative Mitch Pellerin and registered nurse Luke Guidry.
