Drainage district sees clean audit

A state audit showed no noncompliance issues for Drainage District-Sub-District A of Gravity No. 1 in Lake Arthur.

According to the Louisiana Legislative Auditor’s Office (LLAO), the sub-district ended the year 2017 with nearly $94,000 in total revenues, including $92,208 in ad valorem taxes, $1,482 in state revenue sharing, and $69 in interest earnings.

Total expenditures came to $84,484 and included nearly $5,530 in uncollected taxes, with the majority of expenses going toward maintenance of the sub-district.

Jones named Rice Festival Grand Parade Marshal

International Rice Festival coordinators announced today that Mayor Greg A. Jones has been chosen as the 82nd Annual International Rice Festival Grand Parade Marshal.

The parade will roll through downtown Crowley on Saturday, October 20.

Jones is the son of Florence and the late Donald Jones, and is a graduate of Crowley High School and Louisiana State University (LSU). Married to Amber Rodriguez Jones, Greg is the proud father of two sons, Kyle and Justin and one daughter, Alex. He is also the proud “Pop” to one granddaughter, Amelie.

China announces $60B of US goods for tariff retaliation

BEIJING (AP) — China on Friday announced a $60 billion list of U.S. goods including coffee, honey and industrial chemicals for retaliation if Washington goes ahead with its latest tariff threat.

LWF Commission sets 2018-19 oyster season

The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission recently set the 2018-19 oyster season based on the annual oyster stock assessment provided by Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries biologists and comments received from members of the public, including the oyster industry.

LSU AgCenter sweet potato field day set for Aug. 16

CHASE — The LSU AgCenter Sweet Potato Research Station near Chase will showcase the latest research and demonstration plots at a field day on Aug. 16.

“The annual field day features the latest sweet potato research and offers producers and industry representatives an opportunity to discuss emerging issues,” said Tara Smith, station coordinator and AgCenter region director.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. at the station, with opening comments and field tours at 8:45. The station is located at 130 Sweet Potato Road, Chase.

Every month for the last 18 months, her office has discovered on average between three and five fake Facebook profiles pretending to be hers, according to a Harris aide. It’s unclear who creates the pages, which are often designed to mislead American voters about the ambitious Democratic senator’s policies and positions.
