US stocks inch higher after solid jobs report for July

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks are mostly higher Friday morning after the Labor Department said hiring remained solid in July. Retailers are making some of the largest gains while industrial and technology companies are slightly lower. There was little immediate reaction to China’s threat to put tariffs on $60 billion in American goods.

Twice in the past year, Brett Kavanaugh offered glimpses of his position on abortion that strongly suggest he would vote to support restrictions if confirmed to the Supreme Court.

One was in a dissent in the case of a 17-yearold migrant seeking to terminate her pregnancy. The other was a speech before a conservative group in which he spoke admiringly of Justice William Rehnquist’s dissent in the 1973 Roe v. Wade case that established a woman’s right to abortion.

MAN ACCUSED OF KILLING ENDANGERED WHOOPING CRANE

BATON ROUGE (AP) — The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says a 52-year-old man is accused of killing an endangered whooping crane.

A news release Thursday says Gilvin Aucoin of Ville Platte admitted July 26 that he’d shot the bird a day earlier while working near a crawfish pond in northeast Evangeline Parish. He was cited with violating the Endangered Species Act, which carries up to a year in jail and a $50,000 fine.

The male bird was among the first 10 of 125 whooping cranes released in Louisiana since 2011.

 

TIME CAPSULE FOUND AT SITE WHERE CONFEDERATE STATUE REMOVED

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The Louisiana lieutenant governor’s office says a time capsule has been found at the site where workers recently removed the pedestal that once carried a statue of Confederate Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard.

The copper box’s contents will be shown to news agencies Friday, but were described in a 1913 article in The Times-Picayune. They include Confederate and U.S. flags, photos of Confederate leaders and monuments, copies of daily papers, and “badges and souvenirs appertaining to the Confederacy.”

 

Iowa residents petition for pavement

IOWA - A resident is asking the parish to pave a dirt road near the parish line in Iowa.

Clay Henry, who lives on Gordon Denison Road, told Jeff Davis police jurors this week that he and 22 other petitioners feel their neighborhood has been neglected when it comes to road repairs and drainage.

“In the last 25 years of living on Gordon Denison Road, I have seen little effort made to improve or maintain the roadway surface, signs, ditches and drainage,” Henry said.

LA wharf, pavilion to be complete by end of August

LAKE ARTHUR - A new wharf and pavilion here are expected to be completed by the end of August.

Councilman Bobby Palermo said this week that work on the wharf is nearly complete, and electricity and lighting is being added to the pavilion. Gravel rock is also being brought into the area to help with parking.

The wharf, located near the east side of the boat ramp near Monlezun Canal, was made possible by $70,000 donated by the nonprofit Team LA. With a new wharf and pavilion, the town is hoping to draw more fishermen to the area.
