IOTA — The halfway point of the 2021 high school football season is in the books and teams are gearing up for the main course.

Indians welcome in rival Basile for Thursday tussle

ELTON – The Elton Indians will again get a chance to get into the win column tonight when they welcome in the longtime rival Basile Bearcats for another episode of “The Battle of the Bayou”. The longstanding rivalry match will be played tonight at 7 pm inside of Cleve Beard Stadium in Elton, and will pit a pair of teams still searching for their identities. The Indians have played good football all season long, but struggle to close games out in the end due to having so many players having to go both ways for an entire football game. Last week, Elton had Merryville on the ropes late, and led 15-14 in the fourth quarter. However, the Panthers rallied to score 20 points in the final frame to claim a 34-15 win. The Indians are sitting at 0-5 overall, 0-2 in league play, and are currently sitting at No. 29 in the Class A power ratings.

WELSH — The Welsh Greyhounds will begin the second season here Thursday night when they host the Notre Dame Pioneers in a District 6-2A battle. Welsh will enter the contest with a 3-2 record following last Friday night’s tough 30-22 loss to Westlake. Notre Dame will come into the district fray with just one loss and four wins.

WELSH - The Westlake Rams rode the hard-running of quarterback Jamaal Guillory and halfback Brandon Jupitar to outlast the Welsh Greyhounds by a 30-22 score here Friday night in a non-district clash. The duo accounted for 324 yards on the ground behind a massive offensive line, with Jupitar rushing for 167 and Guillory adding 157.

Iota edge out Patriots 28-24

The Iota Bulldogs improved to 3-2 on the year with a tough-fought victory here tonight versus the North Vermilion Patriots.

Longtime rivals Red Sox, Yankees back at it in AL wild card

BOSTON (AP) — Oh, it’s on.

A day before he is scheduled to face the Red Sox in the AL wild-card game, New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole dropped the name that dare not be spoken within the confines of Fenway Park — at least not since the last onegame playoff between the longtime rivals was decided by a light-hitting shortstop popping the go-ahead homer over the Green Monster.

“Bucky Dent, right?” Cole said when asked what he knew about the history between the teams. “You’re dreaming about putting yourself in that position, and coming through for your team. And here we are.”

Milestone for Bubba Wallace as he earns first NASCAR victory

TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) — The hard part wasn’t dodging his way around a crash and then driving to the front of the field at Talladega Superspeedway. That was just instinct for Bubba Wallace.

Saints’ Payton wants lessons from loss to Giants to stick

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Saints coach Sean Payton generally doesn’t like to dwell on losses.

A new week brings a new game, new matchups and a new scheme that may emphasize some players and de-emphasize others relative to the previous week.

But on Monday, the Saints’ fourth-quarter collapse against the previous winless New York Giants in a 27-21 overtime loss was still bothering New Orleans’ longtime coach.

“That game’s over, but we’ve got to learn from it,” Payton stressed.

Lynn, Abreu lift White Sox over Tigers for 5th straight win

CHICAGO (AP) — Lance Lynn pitched one-run ball over five innings, José Abreu homered and drove in four runs, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 8-1 Friday night for their fifth straight win.

Tim Anderson added four hits for the AL Central champions as they prepare for next week’s AL Division Series against the Houston Astros. Chicago entered the day trailing the Astros by two games in the race for home-field advantage.

Dogs drop contest to No. 2 Sterlington

STERLINGTON - The No. 2-ranked Sterlington Panthers showed their strength Friday night as they demolished the Jennings Bulldogs 45-14 in a rainy showdown. The Panthers took a 14-0 lead before the Dogs could take an offensive snap, and never looked back in building a big 35-7 halftime advantage. Sterlington stayed perfect on the season at 5-0, while Jennings dropped to 1-4.
