No. 3 Lady Tigers pull away from No. 2 Amite 71-57

HAMMOND — The No.3 Lake Arthur Lady Tigers moved into the Class 2A state championship game here Monday night by knocking down the No. 2-seeded Amite Lady Warriors by a final of 71-57. The Lady Tigers rode big nights from Deonna Brister and Kali Hornsby, who combined to score 56 of Lake Arthur’s 71 points. The Lady Tigers will now advance to play No. 1-seeded Doyle in the 2A state finals set for Friday night at 7:30 pm at the University Center in Hammond on the campus of Southeastern Louisiana University.

Conner’s No-No lifts Tigers to 10-0 shutout over Lacassine

LAKE ARTHUR - The Lake Arthur Tigers (LA) got a dominant pitching performance from lefty Cason Conner over the weekend at the Lake Arthur Tournament, as he no-hit the Lacassine Cardinals by a final of 10-0. Conner went five innings in the 10-run rule victory, allowing only one walk and striking out five Cardinal hitters. The Tigers (3-0) scored a single run in the first, two in the second, one in the fourth and six in the fifth to close out the win. The Tigers managed only five hits in the contest, but capitalized on four Cardinal walks and errors.

No.16 Jennings rallies for 57-52 win over Mansfield

The first round playoff game between the No. 17 Mansfield Wolverines and the No. 16 Jennings Bulldogs was a close contest between two evenly matched teams.

The game went down to the final 25 seconds before the Bulldogs won 57-52, getting their first playoff win since 2017. The contest had 14 lead changes, seven ties and neither team lead by more than seven points.

Lady Hounds smash through Oakdale 15-4

OAKDALE - The Welsh Lady Greyhounds moved to 2-0 on the young softball season this weekend as they pounded the Oakdale Lady Warriors by a final of 15-4. The Lady Hounds benefited from 13 Oakdale walks, and smashed out six hits in the 10-run rule victory in five innings. Welsh pitcher Kaylee Guimbellot picked up the win in the cirde for the Lady Hounds by firing 3.1 innings of relief, scattering four hits, three walks and two strikeouts. Alli Manuel came in and earned a save in the win by firing 12 innings, and scattered four hits, two walks and struck out three Warrior hitters.

LAKE ARTHUR — The No. 3 Lake Arthur Lady Tigers are back in there second home following a dominating win over Springfieldthe LHSAAs Class 2A state tournament. Lake Arthur blew the Lady Bulldogs out of the water from start to finish at “Nookie” Moore Gymnasium Thursday night, claiming an 81-36 victory to advance to play the No. Amite Warriors in the semi-finals at the University Center in Hammond on Monday night at 7 pm. The Lady Tigers left little doubt from the opening tip who would be the better team on this night, and buried a whopping 13 3-pointers as a team in the blowout win. Lake Arthur Head Coach Vickie Sketoe discussed her team’s dominant performance, and raved about their excitement going into the contest.

Lady Dogs drop heartbreaker to South Beauregard 56-49

LONGVIT - The third time wasn’t the charm for Jennings as the No.6 Lady Dogs fell to the No.3 South Beauregard Lady Knights 56-49 in a quarterfinal playoff game in Longville. The Lady Dogs lost to their district rivals twice in the regular season by 9 and 3 points, and fought hard for all 32 minutes in a game that had several lead changes before losing by 7 points.

HATHAWAY — The No. 1 Hathaway Lady Hornets punched their second straight ticket to the LHSAA Class B State Tournament on Thursday night by defeating No. 8 Zwolle by a final of 53-46 at Charles F. Grath Gymnasium. The win will now send the Lady Hornets into the semi-final round of the bracket where they will meet district rival Bell City at 5pm on Monday at Burton Coliseum. If the Hornets win that contest, they will advance to the Class B state championship game on Thursday at the University Center in Hammond on the campus of Southeastern Louisiana University.

The Jennings Bulldogs kicked off the 2021 baseball season with a bang Tuesday night, using Ian Mullen’s gem on the mound to top Eunice by a score of 4-0. The senior right-hander allowed only a single hit in the seventh inning, but struck out a whopping 16 Bobcat hitters to earn his first victory of the season. Junior outfielder Lane Kratzer paced a nine-hit Bulldog attack by going 3-for-4 at the dish, while Seth Benoit and Will Monic also collected a pair of hits. Ethan Mack and Kolby Estes also popped hits for the Dogs in the victory.
