Louisiana-Lafayette wins, coach sets Sun Belt wins mark

LAFAYETTE (AP) — Cedric Russell made coach Bobby Marliln’s record-breaking win memorable scoring five points points in a game-closing 7-0 run that gave Louisiana a 76-74 win over Texas-Arlington on Monday night.

Baseball and Softball Registration underway

Baseball and Softball registration is underway at the Jennings Parks and Recreation Department. Boys and Girls ages 6-14 are encouraged to participate. The registration fee is $25 per player, and the final day to send in forms is on Tuesday, March 2,2021.

No. 3 Lady Tigers destroy Rapides 14-30

LAKE ARTHUR - The No. 3 Lake Arthur Lady Tigers finally were able to get back on the court Saturday after having their opening round Class 2A playoff game moved back due to winter weather earlier in the week. However, the Lady Tigers were their same old selves after the delay, cruising to a 74-30 win over the Rapides Lady Mustangs to advance to the regional round yet again. Lake Arthur had an extremely quick turn around from game-to-game, as they did battle with Red River High School Monday afternoon at “Nookie” Moore Gymnasium. No. 14 Red River defeated No. 19 D’Arbonne Woods Charter Sunday afternoon to advance to take on the Lady Tigers for the chance to play in the quarterfinals. With the win, Lake Arthur was able to move their dazzling overall record to 27-4 on the season.

Girls’ playoff brackets taking shape following delays

With last week’s historic winter weather finally out of the way, the LHSAA girls’ basketball playoff brackets finally started to get back on track over the weekend. With many games throughout the state being moved from their originally scheduled dates, the future for most parish teams were ironed out with games being played. Three Jeff Davis Parish (JDP) schools received opening-round byes because of their stellar play throughout the regular season, and were forced to sit and wait until other games could be decided.

The No. 6-ranked Jennings Lady Bulldogs won an opening round Class 3A playoff game Thursday night, topping the Iowa Lady Yellow Jackets by a final of 62-41 at Gaudet Gymnasium. The win was the third of the season over Iowa, as Jennings won a pair of district contests over Iowa. With the win, Jennings improves to 20-7 overall and will advance to the regional round of the Class 3A playoffs. Iowa capped off their season with an 8-18 record. The Lady Dogs will now await the winner of No. 11 Union Parish and No. 22 West Feliciana.

Despite the wintry weather this past week, the Jennings Lady Bulldogs, Lake Arthur Lady Tigers and the Welsh Lady Greyhounds will begin their playoff conquests this weekend around the area. The Lady Bulldogs played their opening round game against the Iowa Lady Yellow Jackets on Thursday evening, while the Lady Hounds are set to travel to Kinder to face their old district rival tonight at 6 p.m. As of press time, the Lady Tigers were still awaiting word from their playoff opponent, Rapides, on when the contest would take place in Lake Arthur. The game would either be played tonight or possibly on Saturday. Check Sunday’s edition of Jennings Daily News for results from Jennings High’s bi-district playoff game.
