Doucet, Bulldogs too much for Greyhounds

IOTA - The Iota Bulldogs used the hard-running of senior tailback Luke Doucet to turn back the Welsh Greyhounds by a 34-0 score here Thursday night in a non-district clash. Doucet finished with a game high 204 yards on 19 carries and three touchdowns in the win that gives the Bulldogs a 2-0 mark for the season.

Anthony Rizzo hits grand slam, Cubs pound Pirates 17-8

CHICAGO (AP) — Anthony Rizzo hit a grand slam, Willson Contreras had two long solo homers and the Chicago Cubs kept pace in the NL wild-card race with a 17-8 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday.

Rookie Nico Hoerner hit a two-run shot for his first major league homer and had four RBIs for the Cubs. Chicago entered the day tied with Milwaukee for the second NL wild card.

Contreras, Hoerner and Nicholas Castellanos homered in the first with the wind blowing out as Chicago scored five times after Pittsburgh jumped on Jon Lester (13-10) for a 4-0 lead.

The Jennings Bulldogs will look to bounce back after a tough, week one loss to the Leesville Wampus Cats in overtime when they travel to Eunice to face the defending 3A state champion Bobcats Friday night. The Cats rallied for a school record 73-34 win over the Northwest Raiders after trailing 34-31 entering the fourth quarter. Eunice popped off 42 unanswered points in the fourth stanza to earn the lopsided victory that was a lot closer than the score indicates. The two teams will square off for the 66th time in this storied rivalry dating back to 1926.

Hathaway faces Bell City

ELTON – The Elton Indians will be searching for a rebound win Friday night when they travel to Vinton to take on former Lake Arthur Tiger

standout Tarius Davis and the Vinton Lions at B.S. Walker Memorial Stadium. The Indians were shutout 13-0 against Oakdale last week, while the Lions were dropped by the St. Edmund Blue Jays at home. Despite the loss to the Jays, Elton Head Coach Donnie Bruchhaus was all praise when discussing what he has seen from the Lions on film heading into their week two clash.
