OPELOUSAS – One day after knocking off the talented Opelousas Indians, the Crowley Millers trekked back to St. Landry Parish to tangle with the Opelousas Warriors. The Millers overcame an early 3-1 deficit to rally for a 9-3 victory to move to 8-2 overall on the season. The Crowley offense banged out 10 hits and took advantage of eight Opelousas miscues to earn their second victory in as many days.

Vandy rides Rocker to 4-1 win, forces a Game 3 vs. Michigan

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Vanderbilt’s go-to guy throughout the postseason once again delivered a dominant performance.

Freshman Kumar Rocker struck out 11 while pitching 6 1/3 innings of three-hit ball, and Vanderbilt got to Michigan’s shaky bullpen in a 4-1 win in Game 2 of the College World Series finals Tuesday night.

The Commodores (58-12), who set the Southeastern Conference single-season wins record, forced a winnertake-all Game 3 on Wednesday night at TD Ameritrade Park.

Abner Doubleday feted on 200th at hometown

BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. (AP) — Abner Doubleday’s boyhood hometown is celebrating his birth 200 years ago. The story that Doubleday invented baseball in 1839 at Cooperstown, New York, has been discredited. But the Civil War officer is still celebrated in Ballston Spa. The Brookside Museum is hosting a party for Doubleday on Wednesday evening to coincide with his birth date. There will be presentations about his life, and participants will take a walk to the house where Doubleday lived when he was a young boy.

CROWLEY – The Jennings Bronco All-Stars took home first-place honors at the Crowley Tune-Up Tournament over the weekend by sweeping undefeated through five games. Jennings defeated both Iowa and Kaplan in poll play games, then won three games on Sunday in bracket play to claim their title. The team is coming off of a third-place finish a week ago at the Frog City Tune-Up Tournament, and now have their sights on the upcoming Sectional Tournament set to begin this week in Jennings.

KAPLAN – The Jennings 12u Softball All-Stars notched a fourth-place finish at the PONY Section Tournament held at multiple sites around the Vermillion Parish area over the weekend. Fourteen teams from throughout South Louisiana competed at the three-day event, with Jennings making it to the third day of finals play.

Welsh Softball stars finish seventh at Sectional Tournament

KAPLAN – The Welsh 12u Softball All-Stars turned in a seventh-place finish at the Sectional Tournament held at multiple sites throughout Vermillion Parish this past weekend after getting off to a rocky start in pool play on Friday. The Lady Hounds dropped their two Friday contests 3-1 to Eunice, and eventually fell 7-1 to tournament champion Kinder in a game that was only 2-1 heading into the final inning of play. Welsh endured a 14-hour day on Saturday to go 2-2, and didn’t leave the ballpark until right at midnight after playing four games in bracket play.

States’ push to legalize sports betting differs by region

CHERRY HILL, N.J. (AP) — In the year since the U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for every state to legalize sports betting , a regional divide has opened as states decide whether to expand their gambling options.

By year’s end, legalization is possible in a dozen states in the Northeast and Midwest. But most states in the Deep South and far West — SEC and Pac-12 territory in college sports — are staying on the sidelines, at least for now.
