Ex-Saint Gleason considered for Congressional Gold Medal

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Federal lawmakers from Louisiana and Washington have submitted legislation to award former New Orleans Saints and Washington State football player Steve Gleason with the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian honor awarded by Congress.

U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, a Republican from Louisiana and a doctor who helped sponsor the legislation, seeks to honor Gleason for his work as an advocate for people with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Dogs drop district showdown to St. Louis

JENNINGS - Struggles on the mound proved costly for the Jennings Bulldogs Tuesday in their District 4-3A showdown with the St. Louis Saints.

The Bulldogs (12-8, 3-4) issued 10 free passes and surrendered 11 runs in the first three innings, enabling the Saints to cruise to a 16-4 victory in a contest that was halted after the sixth inning due to the mercy.

The Saints remain the lone unbeaten team in league play with the victory and they improved to 18-11 overall.

Errors prove costly for Lady Eagles in loss to Assembly Christian

JENNINGS – One bad inning was all it took Tuesday for the Bethel Christian Lady Eagles.

Assembly Christian exploded for nine runs in the third inning of a tight game and the Lady Eagles were never able to recover in a 19-9 setback at Bethel’s home park.

The Lady Lions led just 3-1 before the outburst in an inning that saw 13 batters approach the plate.

The visitors took advantage of a pair of errors and banged out eight hits in the frame, including a threerun inside the park home run to left by Amber Mora.

The miscues were what proved costly, however.

Griffin III hopes to start anew as a backup QB with Ravens

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — After winning a Heisman Trophy, being picked second overall in the 2012 NFL draft and becoming an instant sensation with the Washington Redskins, Robert Griffin III is looking ahead to a promising future instead of wistfully gazing at his brilliant past.

Griffin agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Baltimore Ravens last week, fully aware his role will be to back up Joe Flacco. He’s fine with that, because RG3 is far more interested in where his career is going rather than where it’s been.

Bulldogs turn tables on Rams in win

JENNINGS – The Jennings Bulldogs looked as if they were on the brink of another heartbreaking loss to Westlake Monday in their District 4-3A matchup.

The Bulldogs (12-7, 3-3) had squandered a five-run lead by allowing six runs in the fifth inning, and they had their backs against the wall entering the bottom of the seventh.

This time, however, it was the Bulldogs who had the final laugh.

Much like Westlake did a week earlier, the Bulldogs rallied for a pair of runs in their final at-bat to even the series with a 7-6 victory.

Mouton no-hitter lifts Iota to win

IOTA – Iota’s Deven Mouton was near perfect against the Northside Christian Warriors Monday.

Mouton faced the minimum 21 batters and struck out 13 en route to tossing a no-hitter in the Bulldogs’ 3-0 victory over the Warriors.

He missed a perfect game by walking one batter in the victory, Iota’s 18th straight.

The victory lifted Iota to 22-3 overall heading into yesterday’s District 5-3A matchup at Port Barre.

Lady Dogs claim victory over Northside Christian

IOTA – Dixie Guidry and Ryley Crochet combined for five hits and six RBI Monday to help lead the Iota Lady Bulldogs to an 11-1 victory over Northside Christian.

The game was halted after the fifth inning due to the mercy rule.

The Lady Dogs improved to 21-8 overall with the victory heading into yesterday’s District 5-3A finale at Eunice.

Northside Christian, Division V’s top-rated team, fell to 16-5. The Lady Warriors took on Rayne yesterday in a non-district matchup to close out their regular-season slate.

No one laughing at Reed after Masters win

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Patrick Reed got some laughs a few years back when he declared himself a top five player, with little on his resume to back it up.

No one is laughing now.

Reed’s breakthrough win in the Masters didn’t officially move him into the top five — he’s now No. 11 in the world — but it certainly moved him into the conversation when the debate turns to major championships.
