GUEYDAN – Trailing 11-8 heading into the top of the seventh, the Lake Arthur Tigers found themselves in an unusual spot Wednesday afternoon- trailing an opponent head coach Brett Lilley said they might have taken for granted. However, the Tigers rallied for 4 runs in the frame to secure a 12-11 victory and skate out of Gueydan with a non-district win.

Astros sweep away Orioles with 3-2 victory

HOUSTON (AP) — On a day that Dallas Keuchel didn’t have his best stuff, a number of other Astros stepped up to help Houston to another win.

Josh Reddick had three hits and Alex Bregman’s tiebreaking RBI single in the seventh inning lifted the Astros to the 3-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday to complete a threegame sweep.

The win improves the Astros to 6-1, which ties the best start in franchise history which they also accomplished in 1987 and 1988.

Levy caps career on 2-A First Team All-State squad

LAKE ARTHUR – Following a season that saw Jamara Levy and her fellow Lake Arthur Lady Tigers advance all the way to the Class 2A state title game before falling in a close contest with North Caddo, the senior point guard was awarded for her efforts by earning a place on the 2A All-State First Team. Fellow teammate Diamond Brister, a junior, also found her name on the Honorable Mention Team after a stellar season on the hardwood for LA Head Coach Vickie Sketoe.

Hounds drop heartbreaker to Pios 4-3

WELSH - The Welsh Greyhounds and Notre Dame Pioneers duked it out this past Tuesday in Sportsman’s Park, in a game that nearly didn’t happen. A bit of rain at the beginning of the game nearly caused the game to get postponed, however the two teams stuck it out and managed to get the game in. The Greyhounds, unfortunately, did not come up with the win and the Pioneers managed to beat the Greyhounds in a close one, 4-3.

Annual LAHS Alumni Softball Tournament scheduled

After graduating high school one of the things that most miss is the opportunity to play high school sports, such as softball. For those people, May 19 will be the day they have been waiting for. The annual Lake Arthur High School (LAHS) Alumni Softball Tournament is just around the corner and is currently searching for teams to play.

The Varsity Club is once again holding the tournament as a fundraiser to give back to LAHS. All funds made during the weekend go directly back to the school’s baseball and softball programs.

Big third inning dooms Cardinals

The No. 9-rankled Fairview Panthers used an 11-run third inning to turn a close contest with the Lacassine Cardinals into a blowout district 6-B win here at Legion Field in Jennings Tuesday night. Errors and free passes, coupled with a pair of bases clearing triples broke open a 3-1 ballgame and ultimately propelled the Panthers to a 18-5 win. In what was a fairly played game besides the third frame, Lacassine starter Mason Hebert shut the Fairview bats down through 2.2 innings until he lost control and the wheels fell off.

Reddick drives in 6 as Astros beat Orioles 10-6

HOUSTON (AP) — A day ago Josh Reddick was pleading for a hit on Twitter after typing “I will get a hit” 13 times in one post worked for St. Louis outfielder Dexter Fowler.

Once Reddick got that first hit out of the way, he busted out in a big way Tuesday night.

Reddick hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning and a grand slam in Houston’s five-run seventh, leading the Astros to a 10-6 win over the Baltimore Orioles.

RAYNE - The Iota Lady Bulldogs scored runs in six of seven innings Monday, including a 10-run outburst in the final frame, in cruising to their 17th victory of the season, a 19-3 thumping of Rayne in a non-district contest at the Lady Wolves’ home park.

In all, the Lady Dogs (17-7) cranked out 18 hits off Rayne hurler Karlie Weber, who also walked nine.

Iota banged out eight of those hits in the top of the seventh inning.

Ryley Crochet logged two of her three hits in the frame, both RBI singles.

Morton helps Astros beat Orioles 6-1 in home opener

HOUSTON (AP) — Charlie Morton pitched six scoreless innings, Marwin Gonzalez homered and the Houston Astros unveiled their World Series banner before defeating the Baltimore Orioles 6-1 on Monday night in their home opener. Morton (1-0) allowed three hits and struck out six. The right-hander picked up where he left off after getting the final 12 outs in Game 7 against the Dodgers to help secure Houston’s first championship. Brad Peacock pitched a perfect seventh and Will Harris allowed one hit in the eighth before Collin McHugh took over.

Lady Bulldogs take team title in Bulldog Relays

IOTA - Chloe Smith and Rose Regan combined for 54 of Iota’s 130 points last week to help lead the Lady Bulldogs to the team title in the 2018 Iota Bulldog Relays.

Lake Arthur finished a distant second in the team standings with 60 points and Kinder was third with 56.

Elton tallied 45 points to finish seventh in the field of 14; Welsh was 11th (11) and Jennings was 13th (6).
