Cubs postpone home opener a day due to snow

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs tried to play their home opener on Monday. It was just a snowgo.

The Cubs’ game against the Pittsburgh Pirates was postponed a day because of persistent snow that covered much of Wrigley Field, creating a scene more reminiscent of December than April.

The Cubs tried pushing back the scheduled start time by an hour, and workers used hand-held blowers to melt the snow on the tarp. But the accumulation and cold temperatures were just too much to overcome.

Giants open OTAs with Odell Beckham Jr.in the building

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — The New York Giants have opened their first organized team activities under new coach Pat Shurmur with star receiver Odell Beckham Jr. in the building.

Speaking on a conference call Monday, Shurmur said he hadn’t yet talked to Beckham, whose name has been prominent in trade speculation in recent months.

Wyoming working former of defensive players at fullback

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — Jaylon Watson had the luxury of watching and learning behind Drew Van Maanen last season. Now, he’s leading the charge.

Watson converted from defensive end/linebacker and fullback last spring and served as Wyoming’s backup to Van Maanen last year. With the team captain graduated, however, Watson now has to be the example for a new crew of fullbacks. Luckily, he’s been in their shoes before. Defensive end Austin Lopez and linebacker Jahmari Moore both moved over to fullback before camp to add depth to the position.

Hounds dismantle Ville Platte 17-0

WELSH - The Welsh Greyhounds picked up a convincing 17-0 District 6-2A win over the Ville Platte Bulldogs here at Sportsman’s Park Thursday to open the second round of league play. The Hounds were able to end the game after 5 innings due to the 10-run rule.

Macey Hicks earned the win on the mound for the Greyhounds by firing 3 innings of 1-hit ball and striking out 1 Bulldog hitter.

Hess dominates Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – LSU sophomore righthander Zack Hess fired eight shutout innings Thursday night to lead the 17th-ranked Tigers to a 4-1 win over No. 19 Texas A&M at Blue Bell Park.

LSU improved to 20-11 overall and 6-4 in the SEC, while Texas A&M dropped to 21-9 overall and 3-7 in conference play.

The teams resume the series with Game 2 at 6 p.m. CT Friday. The contest will be televised by the SEC Network, and it can be heard on affiliates of the LSU Sports Radio Network.

Rams rally past Dogs 3-2

WESTLAKE - The Westlake Rams only logged one hit Thursday, but they made it count in their District 4-3A showdown against Jennings.

The Rams (14-13, 6-1) got a leadoff single from Evan Goss in the sixth inning and he moved around the bases on an error and a wild pitch before scoring the eventual winning run on a sacrifice fly to center field by Michael Harlow in Westlake’s 3-2 victory over the Bulldogs.

Jennings (11-7, 2-3) got another crack at the Rams on Saturday, but results of that contest were not available at press time.

MLB serves up a frosty start to new season, more snow coming

Steady and sure-handed, Minnesota Twins second baseman Brian Dozier is a confident mitt man.

But the Gold Glover didn’t feel that way this week, standing in the snow globe of PNC Park in Pittsburgh.

“I always want the ball to hit to me, but that was the one time where I was hoping it wouldn’t be hit my way,” Dozier said. “It would have been very tough trying to catch a popup in those conditions.”
