1927- Baton Rouge, January 14 - Tobacco loving citizens of Louisiana have sent up in smoke during the past three months a sum between four and five millions dollars, thereby enriching the state’s public schools to the extent of nearly $500,000. Receipts from the 10 percent tax on all forms of tobacco, the proceeds of which go to public education according to enactment by the 1926 legislature which passed the law to tallied $494,338.16 during the three months of its operation so far, according to W.N. McFarland, supervisor of public accounts, who is vested by law with the authority to collect the tax. Receipts during December, the third month, amounted $130,320.06 while in November receipts were $141,132.50, and in October the first month, $222,885.00.
