TRAFFIC OPEN ALL THE WAY ON CUTTING

1940 - Traffic was allowed over the new $100,000 Cutting Avenue pavement today, the last barrier being moved last night at the intersection at First Street, and motorists henceforth could drive the mile and tenth length from the oil field road on the north to where the avenue meets the Old Spanish Trail.

1940- In the short space of time since the sale as Zigler Motors, Inc. they have sold new and used cars, and among them 43 used cars delivered to customers, they have sold late model cars prices at $965. Only five of their trade-ins remain unsold. This fresh stock has been coming through their reconditioning department and placed in the sale allowing the customer to use the coupon, valued at $25 when a trade-in is involved, W. C. 1940 - Mr. and Mrs. O. W. Broussard have purchased the two story brick building and lots, formerly owned by Ernest Huval of Crowley which has housed the Broussard Steam Laundry on South Broadway Street. The consideration was said to have been $3,500.

When Mr and Mrs. M. L. Arnaudet moved into their now home on May Street and had a telephone installed this week, they unknowingly became the owner of the one thousandth telephone to be in use in Jennings. M. M. Buchanan, district manager, informed the News.\\ The installation which brought 1,000 telephones into use in Jennings set an all time record for telephone stations in this city and Mr. Buchanan said the new installations, here had shown the progressive increase of the population of this city.

Newspaper - school scrap metal drive

L. H. Richard, Acting Superintendent of Jeff Davis Parish Schools announced today that the Newspaper-School Scrap Metal drive entered its second week and is doing fantastic. This drive will continue until October 24, and by that time every piece of metal and rubber scrap should be on a scrap pile. The schools are doing a magnificent job of collecting the scrap for which our Government is calling. The citizens throughout the parish are to be congratulated of splendid co-operation in the drive.

Baby plays with gadgets on auto instrument board, turns switch locks steering gear, two in hospital

1943 - An eighteen moth old baby, to amuse itself while the mother was driving the automobile, playing with the gadgets on the instrument board of the car and innocently turned off the car switch which in turn automatically locked the steering gear.

Free pamphlets to public on rationing and price control

1942 - Mr. Irma Cook, office manager of the consumers information center located in the Morse building, had just received pamphlets concerning price control and rationing. This literature is free to anyone desiring information on these subjects and is very instructive to both the consumer and retailer. The office also received another booklet, “What Can I Do” that will also be given away. The book gives many things that you, as an individual, can and should do to help in the war effort.

Farm workers to get referral cards to get gasoline

1942 - Migratory farm workers need have no fear of being stranded away from home when national gasoline rationing starts, according to Amos J. Derouen, Manger of the Lake Charles office of the United State Employment Service.
