Keep the stock penned up

Complaint is heard good and loud by residents on East Academy Avenue that some careless people residing in the neighborhood do not keep their stock penned up at night, and by leaving the gate open allow their cows and horses to escape which plays havoc with the vegetable garden, flowers, etc.

The Last Gas Pump

This old gas pump owned by Bill Broussard is but a reminder of the “good old days:’ But all are gone now. Esso, the tiger on the tank, the price of gas still showing on the pump...36 cents! Broussard said the old 25-30-year-old pump was last used in about 1972-73 - before the Arab oil embargo.

68-year-old woman passes through Jennings on hike

A 68-year-old woman, who walked 1,500 miles of a 3,000 mile trip from Philadelphia to California last year to protest low welfare payments in Pennsylvania, passed through Jennings Saturday on her way back to Philadelphia.

Sun-bronzed, grey-haired and spunky, Mrs. Helen Hall said that the walking was the best thing she could have done for her arthritis. “The constant exercise keeps the calcium deposits to a minimum’,’ she said as she explained that she walks until she gets tired and then she catches a ride.

THREE PRISONERS MAKE THEIR ESCAPE FROM PARISH JAIL

At 11 oblock last night Louis Alexander and Frank Broussard and Albert Landry escaped from the parish jail by sawing and breaking out an iron bar from the lower south window. The instrument used was a case knife which they left on the sill. Where the iron entered the casement it was badly eroded and easily broken off, when the other part of the bar was sawn through. The night was stormy and the men met with no interruption.

Public showing of film ‘Brainwashing’ to be held Monday

A public showing of the film “Brainwashing” will be on Monday, November 20, at 7:30 p.m. at the American Legion Hall in Jennings. The film depicts, through interviews with former prisoners of the Communists, the methods successfully used by the Communists to break down the individual’s will to resist.

It also shows how others have withstood the attempts to control will and mind.

The film is presented free of charge by Jennings Post No. 19, American Legion.

LETTER IS FIRST NEWS FROM KIN IN23 YEARS

A letter received by Mrs. J.H. Wildman from her niece, the former Miss Viola Crouch, Jennings native, is the first the local relatives have heard of her since she left here 23 years ago.
