Town gathering historical information for book

Throughout the year of 1988, the town of Welsh celebrated its 100th birthday. Although the banners have come down and all of the celebrations have been completed, it has not been totally forgotten.

Kindergarten students at First Baptist Church held their annual Thanksgiving production on Thursday, Nov. 18. The children delighted parents and families as they performed songs and stories dress in holiday costumes.

Welsh man leaves 178 descendants

A Welsh resident with a total of 178 descendants died on his birthday Monday at the age of 94.

Man escapes burning home as roof falls in

Burley Jones, a Jennings man, barely escaped serious injury or death when his home was destroyed by fire this morning.

Whitney begins drive for pure meat in parish

The drive for pure meat has been started throughout the parish, Dr. John M. Whitney, director of the Parish Health Unit stated today.

Talking pictures now available

Many Jenningsites will soon be motoring over to Beaumont to “take in” the talking pictures, the greatest invention yet perfected in the amusement world.

Beaumont is one of the first 500 of the 30,000 picture houses in the United States to get the Vitaphone.

Walter P. Richardson, noted actor of New Orleans, who visited in Beaumont last week, stated that the Texas city was fortunate on being able to have the Vitaphone installed at the Liberty theater since the concern putting in the equipment is literally swamped with orders, refusing to take more until after April 1929.

Dial phone service begins in Elton

The Elton Exchange of Southwestern States Telephone Co. will be converted to the new dial system at 9 p.m. today according to J.M. Nelson, division manager.

The formal ceremony will take place in the newly completed exchange office on Highway 190 next to the old telephone office, with town officials and local civic club members attending.

A town official will throw the switch for the cutover and the president of a local civic organization will place the first long distance call.

BEE STINGS ZAP MEDIC

Chuck Dugas and Ray Fontenot of Acadian Ambulance in Jennings had to fight off bees Sunday in order to rescue drivers from an automobile crash Sunday.

The two were on their way back from Lafayette when they received the call to go to an accident on La. 370 near Church Point, according to Keith Simon of Acadian Ambulance.

When they arrived at the scene, Dugas attempted to help one victim. The two cars had crashed into some honey bee hives and the bees were swarming over the injured men. Dugas was stung about 30 times before giving up.
