Sixth grade skirts are cut from rules

If you've got a girl attending the sixth grade in Jeff Davis Parish you don't have to be as worried about the length of her skirts as you would had she been born one year earlier.

At Thursday night's meeting of the parish school board, it was decided sixth grade girls, who are still considered as involved in that rapid growing period of life, would be deleted from the regulations laid down earlier by the board.

School officials are enforcing the law regarding skirts to an allowance of the top of the knee for young ladies from the seventh through the 12th grades.

Welsh celebrates centennial

Residents of the Town of Welsh gathered at city hall last night to commemorate the 100th birthday of the town.

Mayor Charles Bull and members of the Board of Aldermen re-enacted the signing of the town charter by placing their names on a copy of the original document. Bull noted that March 15 is the actual date of the founding of Welsh.

Winners in the centennial contests were announced. Mary Sue Lyon won the logo contest, Kelly Ponder received first place in the poster contest and the Welsh Nursing Home contributed the winning slogan, "Welsh: The Choice of the Future."

Possum breaks in saloon to lick up hard liquor

Possums are getting numerous in Jennings but when they steal into a saloon to lick up spilled whiskey and beer, it's something else.

When Belezare Lopez and Mark Langley were working around Joe's Bar No. 2 Tuesday night, they noticed an animal behind the counter licking up the beer and hard liquor which had been spilled during the day.

They opine they had little trouble in capturing the possum which gave evidence of having drunk too much.

Communism theme of talk

The Rev. Jules O. Daigle, pastor of Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church at Welsh, discussed the nature of modern communism when he spoke to his fellow Rotarians at the regular meeting of the club last Thursday at the Hotel Abbott.

Leon Drouet was in Jennings last night

Leon Drouet, the man who is walking from Los Angeles, Calif., to New Orleans, a distance of over two thousand miles, in the interest of New Orleans' progressive union, was in Jennings last evening, stopping long enough to secure the signature of the Times-Record editor before moving on to Mermentau.

Mr. Drouet left Los Angeles on May 22 and will have been on the road three months by August 22. He is advertising the Manufacturer's exhibition which commences in the Crescent City the first of next month and does not wish to reach there until September 1, the opening day.

Pvt. Joe Trahan is liberated

Private Joseph Trahan, a Jennings infantryman with the third army, has been liberated from a German prison camp, his wife, Mrs. Clara Trahan, West Division Street, was informed yesterday in a telegram from the war department.

About the same time Mrs. Trahan received a letter from her husband which said, "I'm feeling okay that I'm freed from a German camp after being a prisoner for four months. I hope to see the good old U.S.A. in a few weeks."

The war department telegram said Trahan was being hospitalized in Europe and it may be several weeks before he was returned home.

Celebrations were held across the parish, including in Jennings, on Nov. 11, 1918, World War I Armistice Day.

Rites honor unknown GI of WWI

The nation pays tribute to the living and dead veterans of its nine wars today in a day of respect newly designated as Veteran's Day.

As in previous years, when Nov. 11 was named Armistice Day, the national tribute centered at the Arlington National Cemetery, just across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C.

Bronze Star in Vietnam service

A Jeff Davis High School and Grambling graduate has received the Bronze Star for service in Vietnam.

Capt. Joseph Broussard Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph "Jack" Broussard of Jennings, received the award during his second tour of duty in Vietnam for "meritorious service in connection with military operations ageist a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam."

Broussard now is attending officers' advanced courses at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

Fred Ritter made 48 flights in raids on Japanese

Japanese seamen never felt safe, for they never knew when one of the Navy's big patrol bombers, covering vast stretches of the Pacific, might swoop down with guns spitting fire and death.
