Stores here closed for Armistice Day holiday

Although there were no ceremonies to mark Armistice Day, all stores, except those usually kept open seven days a week, were closed in Jennings yesterday along with the bank and public offices and the library.

Schools did not close and no programs marked the eighteenth anniversary of the end of the World War.

Find 3 vets of Spanish War still in parish

As was incorrectly stated in yesterday's issue of the News, O.W. Henderson, 80, Elton resident who died yesterday, was not the last Spanish-American War veteran in the parish.

As pointed out by relatives and the parish service officer, three other veterans of that war still reside in the parish.

Leonard J. Keys, 80, also of Elton, served with the 2nd U.S. Volunteer Infantry in Cuba. He was with the same company, Company K, with which the late John Gamble served. Keys is the father of Mrs. Jack Segraves of Jennings.

Reed brothers have proved to be assets to their country

Four young brothers from a family of 12 children have achieved outstanding records in the military service of their country, Capt. Robert A. Reed, Spec. 4 Daniel Reed, Airman Richard A. Reed and Spec. 4 Gary Paul Reed, the sons of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Reed of Jennings.

Twenty-four-year-old Capt. Robert Reed is a company commander at Fort Eustis, Va. He attended medic school while working at Brooke General Hospital in San Antonio, Tex.

Tragedy at Welsh due to rain

A Lake Charles man was killed early this morning when he fell as he came down from a drilling rig at the Welsh oil field.

E.J. Duplichien, a derrick man for C.B. Knox Drilling Contractors of Houston, Texas, was riding a traveling block down the rig when he slipped in the early morning rain and fell 55 feet to the platform. His skull was fractured and he died twenty minutes later.

Andrew Fox dies aged 120 years

Andrew Fox, an aged man, died Monday evening and was buried Tuesday, the funeral being conducted by Rev. Steward of the Baptist church. Elder Fox, as he was commonly called, has been a resident of Jennings for about 20 years. He was freed from slavery when 65 years old and became a soldier in the Union Army during the war of the rebellion, and was drawing a pension at the time of his death, at the age of 120 years. His wife, who survives him, is said to be over 100 years old.

LA man asks revocation of his probation and gets wish

A Lake Arthur man, Maxie Broussard, told 31st Judicial District Judge Walter Peters he couldn't live up to the terms of his probation in his home town and asked that his two-year probation be revoked. It was revoked.

It was revoked.

Broussard is now back in the parish jail serving the remainder of a oneyear jail term which grew out of his pleading guilty last November to theft by check from the Shop-a-Lot store. He made his plea in

SANITARIUM MAY BE OPENED IN JENNINGS

Judge J.C. Hoyt of Estherwood, a former resident of Jennings, informs the Jennings Semi-Weekly News that he is negotiating with an organization of Iowa capitalists to build or establish a large sanitarium in Jennings.

Mr. Hoyt says that the concern, which operates a successful institution in Iowa, is very desirous of getting a location in Southwest Louisiana and that he is endeavoring to interest them in picking Jennings for the location.

Accident victim picked up by passing motorist

E.C. Kuhlo, a traveling man of Beaumont, reports that while coming to Jennings late Friday evening, west of Welsh he was hailed by E.C. Jones, of Crowley, who having fallen from a truck several hours earlier breaking an arm and receiving other painful bruises, was in a very weakened condition from pain and loss of blood.

Mr. Kuhlo rushed him to the Crowley hospital as quickly as possible.
