Firefighter killed, 3 injured at Wisconsin transit station

APPLETON, Wis. (AP) — A firefighter responding to a medical emergency was killed in a shooting at a Wisconsin bus station that left a police officer and two others injured, officials said.

The shooting happened after police and firefighters responded to a medical emergency around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Valley Transit in downtown Appleton, fire and police officials said. Appleton Officer Meghan Cash said there was no ongoing threat to the community, but she didn’t say if anyone was in custody.

Fenton goes smoke-free

FENTON - The village will soon prohibit smoking in all public workplaces.

Mayor Eddie B. Alfred, Jr. and alderwomen voted unanimously to pass the ordinance, which will stop anyone from smoking in or near the entrances to any public buildings and workplaces.

“We already have some things in place here at the village hall,” said Alfred. “We support the health of our community. I want to protect our citizens and make the community aware of the dangers of secondhand smoke.”

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — An oil pipeline that runs across Saudi Arabia was hit Tuesday by drones, the Saudi energy minister said, as regional tensions flared just days after what the kingdom called an attack on two of its oil tankers near the Persian Gulf.

While both U.S. President Donald Trump and Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said they were not planning for conflict, the volatility was felt in oil markets with benchmark Brent crude trading over $71 a barrel, up more than $1 on the day.

Local man arrested for aggravated assault

A Roanoke man is being charged for assaulting 11 pedestrians including several children who were collecting crawfish from a ditch on La. 26.

On Tuesday, May 14, Dwight J. Hollier, 57, of Roanoke, was charged with 11 counts of aggravated assault.

Jeff Davis Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Chris Ivey said deputies originally received a call April 18 about a man attempting to run over several pedestrians who were catching crawfish in a roadside ditch near the intersection of La. 26 and La. 1126.
