BEIJING (AP) — U.S. officials listed $300 billion more of Chinese goods for possible tariff hikes while Beijing vowed Tuesday to “fight to the finish” in an escalating trade battle that is fueling fears about damage to global economic growth.

Suit seeks to hold Vatican at fault for abuse by US priests

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Three brothers who were sexually abused by a priest from the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday against the Vatican, claiming the Holy See bears responsibility because the case was mishandled by former Archbishop John Nienstedt and the Vatican’s former ambassador to the United States.

The lawsuit attempts to trace a direct line from clergy sex abuse victims to the Vatican, through Minnesota church officials. Luke, Stephen and Benedict Hoffman were abused by former priest Curtis Wehmeyer, roughly between 2009 and 2012.

Comedian Tim Conway of ‘The Carol Burnett Show’ dies at 85

NEW YORK (AP) — Tim Conway, the impish second banana to Carol Burnett who won four Emmy Awards on her TV variety show, starred aboard “McHale’s Navy” and later voiced the role of Barnacle Boy for “Spongebob Squarepants,” has died. He was 85.

Conway died Tuesday morning in a Los Angeles care facility after a long illness, according to Howard Bragman, who heads LaBrea Media. Conway’s wife, Charlene Fusco, and a daughter, Jackie, were at his side.

Elton tackles delinquent accounts

ELTON - Town officials are giving residents here more time to pay their utility bills before a cutoff date in an effort to ensure accounts are paid in full and in a timely manner.

The town council adopted a resolution Monday to amend its utility ordinance in order to change the date of disconnection from the 20th of the first month to the 20th day of the second month of delinquency.

Debt recovery efforts successful

ELTON - Officials say the town will see an increase in revenue soon thanks to a debt collection company they hired last year to handle the recovery of unpaid utility bills.

In 2018 the town hired a third party, Louisiana Municipal Advisory and Technical Services Bureau (LaMATS), to help recoup debt from inactive utility accounts with overdue bills.

At a Monday meeting of the Elton Town Council, Mayor Tony Laughlin said the individual the town hired to help eliminate the backlog is working hard to address the issue.
