LAKE ARTHUR – History was made here on Tuesday afternoon, as Tiger senior pitcher Peyton Thibodeaux signed a national letter of intent to continue his playing career at Centenary College in Shreveport. Thibodeaux is the first Lake Arthur baseball player to ever receive a college scholarship to continue playing the game at the next level.

Saudi Arabia says its oil pipeline was hit by drones

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — An oil pipeline that runs across Saudi Arabia was hit Tuesday by drones, the Saudi energy minister said, as regional tensions flared just days after what the kingdom called an attack on two of its oil tankers near the Persian Gulf.

While both U.S. President Donald Trump and Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said they were not planning for conflict, the volatility was felt in oil markets with benchmark Brent crude trading over $71 a barrel, up more than $1 on the day.

Local man arrested for aggravated assault

A Roanoke man is being charged for assaulting 11 pedestrians including several children who were collecting crawfish from a ditch on La. 26.

On Tuesday, May 14, Dwight J. Hollier, 57, of Roanoke, was charged with 11 counts of aggravated assault.

Jeff Davis Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Chris Ivey said deputies originally received a call April 18 about a man attempting to run over several pedestrians who were catching crawfish in a roadside ditch near the intersection of La. 26 and La. 1126.

HACKBERRY (AP) — President Donald Trump showcased his “America First energy policy” on Tuesday during a trip to Louisiana designed to highlight his administration’s efforts to increase liquefied natural gas exports and boost the country’s energy infrastructure.

A foam incentive party in on the schedule for the month of May. On Thursday, May 16, students who have met the academic and behavior requirements for PBIS will be treated to a foam party.

The second grade class will celebrate the end of the school year with a party on Friday, May 17.

The first grade class will hold their end of the year celebration on Monday, May 20.

Pre-k graduation will take place on Monday, May 20 at 8 a.m. in the LAES gym.

Joe Biden and restoring the old (pre-Trump) era

There was a school of thought that said former Vice President Joe Biden would begin to sink in the polls the moment he announced his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination. Biden’s first day in the race, the thinking went, would be his best day.

In fact, the opposite has happened. Since formally becoming a candidate on April 25, Biden has shot up in the polls. On announcement day, Biden held a 6.3-point lead over second-place Sen. Bernie Sanders in the RealClearPolitics average of polls. Today, that lead is 23.5 points. That is a big change.

A different kind of Letter to the Editor

I am not just a guest columnist for this newspaper. I am also a consumer. I subscribe to the Jennings Daily News for the information and entertainment that I receive from reading it.

I could have written a “Letter to the Editor” and I would be addressing that letter to my “boss,” Sheila Smith, who is the managing editor. Instead, I have chosen this venue to not only commend Ms. Smith on a job well done, but to thank her for trying to teach young people to be aware of the life that is getting ready to slap them rudely and painfully across the face.

JDN proud of area graduates

High school graduation ceremonies are underway this week. It seems like only yesterday, the biggest challenges facing the hundreds of local graduating seniors were completing their ABC’s, counting to 10 and writing their names.

Breaux named LAHS Student of the Year

Each year, three students are chosen from the two schools in Lake Arthur as Students of the Year. When choosing a student of the year, it is not as easy as one may think. Each school has several students who are deserving of the reward. Lake Arthur Junior High School (LAJHS) eighth grade honor student Auto Daniel Breaux is one of those very deserving students and he was chosen as the LAJHS Student of the Year. There are several reasons why he has been chosen as the 2018-2019 LAJHS Student of the Year, including his outstanding grades, as well as community and school involvement.
