The Lake Arthur High School (LAHS) Junior High cheer team recently held their tryouts for the new 2019 team. There were 19 cheer hopefuls who prepared for ant attended the try-outs.

As they walked into the Lake Arthur Elementary School (LAES) Gym on their last day as LAES students, the members of the sixth grade class of 2019 were announced one by one by LAES Principal, Donna Woods. The students who were announced completed the necessary criteria to graduate from the sixth grade and therefor continue on to the seventh grade, and junior high school!

Assailant, cyber coverage sought for schools

With campus violence and cyber attacks no longer uncommon to society, the Jeff Davis Parish School Board is looking to purchase insurance providing coverage related to both issues.

Lloyd’s of London offers comprehensive violent assailant coverage for $9,175 annually that provides up to $1 million in coverage overall for malicious physical attacks with a weapon and costs associated with response to any attack.

Fenton plans Fourth of July event, street dance

FENTON - The people of the village are looking forward to some summer fun. Organizers have planned two afternoon events at the pavilion for residents to enjoy.

“On Thursday, July 4, we will host a small fireworks display for the children to see. This will be our very first fireworks show,” said Village Clerk Krisi Boese. “We will serve burgers, hot dogs and other refreshments as well.”

Boese said they wanted to do something families and children can enjoy.

Elton rollover crash results in injuries

A female driver was transported to a local hospital for injuries Tuesday morning after her vehicle rolled over during a crash on La. 26 just north of Elton. Fire Chief John Richer said his department responded to the scene and attended to the female until an ambulance arrived.

Superintendent recommends declining Sowela offer

Due to its size and needed repairs, the former Sowela building on North Main Street in Jennings will likely not be utilized by the parish school system.

The Jeff Davis Parish School Board in 2013 contributed $100,000 for the purchase of land on North Sherman Street where the current Sowela Morgan Smith Campus is located. At the time, Superintendent of Schools Kirk Credeur said, Sowela discussed donating the North Main Street campus to the Jeff Davis Parish School System once the new college was built.

Department of Louisiana’s James O. Hall Post 19 American Legion in Jennings is asking any family of the Post’s charter members to participate in their centennial celebration this fall.

Vice Commander Glenn McFarlain said October 10 marks the 100th anniversary of Post 19.

“Post and Unit members are looking for family members of the Post’s charter members so that they can include them in the celebration,” McFarlain said. “The Post, along with Unit 19 of the American Legion Auxiliary, is in the process of planning some activities to mark this very special event.”

San Francisco moves closer to nation’s first e-cigarette ban

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco supervisors moved a step closer Tuesday to becoming the first city in the U.S. to ban all sales of electronic cigarettes to crack down on youth vaping.

Supervisors unanimously approved a ban on the sale and distribution of e-cigarettes. They also endorsed a ban on manufacturing of e-cigarettes on city property. The measures will require a subsequent vote before becoming law.

“We spent the ‘90s battling big tobacco, and now we see its new form in e-cigarettes,” Supervisor Shamann Walton said.
